Christmas is a secular holiday. Even baby Jesus and the manger have basically become secular symbols of the most comercial Holiday ever.

I don't think that anyone should be allowed to be offended by a secular holiday complete with all the symbols. The only people who should really be offended are those who celebrate the religious version.

Well, if not from non-Christians, where would anti-Christmas behavior and political correctness come from?
The government? The media?

I've personally never met an aetheist who didn't like Christmas.

Now for some positive news on the war on Christmas, ...someone at my office got in a bit of hot water for referring to Christmas as "X-mas" in a company email. Awesome....

Why exactly did the employee get in hot water?

That's just it - I personally don't see any atheists, agnostics, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, [insert belief system here] rallying against Christmas. Maybe companies are trying too hard to appease everyone when the people they are trying to appease don't actually care about it in the first place.

The media does like to make an issue out of things, of course. Whip people into a frenzy by suggesting that something dear to them is under attack. Common formula.

Yes, I got that from your earlier post. What I don't understand is why that was considered worthy of being disciplined (and the tone of your post seemed to imply that you agreed with this action).

I'm thinking one of the senior managers is a traditionalist....or maybe christian.

I wouldn't say the person was "disciplined" for it, but a warning email was sent to refer to Christmas as Christmas rather than x-mas.

It was nice to see someone back tradition for once....instead of a politically correct version of everything.

I write xmas all the time. TBQH, it's an abbreviation, not an attack on Christmas.

You should write it as 4X4mas.

And ironically, 'X' is a historical abbreviation for Christ, so "Xmas" isn't really negative at all to Christ or Christians.

A warning email? Really? Wow, that's just silly. I'd hate to have to work for whoever the manager was that went on that stupid power trip.

If management at your company are Christian traditionalists, then this should have been a non-issue to them. Traditionally, the Greek letter Chi has been used as an abbreviation for "Christ". Because Chi resembles the letter "X" in our alphabet, that letter is substituted for Chi and thus Christmas becomes Xmas.

Sometime in the last 20 years or so, angry Christians who don't know the history of their own religion but want something to get riled up about started attacking the use of Xmas as a shortened form of Christmas because they thought this was "removing Christ from Christmas."

I don't know if this one dept. manager is christian for sure, just speculating....I assumed it was christians who don't care for "x-mas".

Thanks for the explanation of what the "x"-mas means.....maybe this should be sent to the manager in question, but I will probably just stay out of it atleast until I get my bonus!!

I too am sick of these foreigners and Jews and atheists coming over here telling us what we can and can't say in December, but I've been looking for years and ain't never found one willing to tell me to my face that I can't say Merry Christmas. They are cowards, every last one of 'em.
You know, honestly, I have NEVER heard of any immigrant that has ever had a problem with the term Christmas. It's actually born and raised overzealous atheist Canadians who cause a stink about using the word. So before you go on your foreigner hate rant, maybe you should check out who acually started this trend. Just sayin'.

While I think it's quite clear that Rouge was being sarcastic, I still greatly agree with Yen Man's post. My office always seems to walk on eggshells around christmas because we don't want to offend anybody, meanwhile the minorities just laugh at whitey.

Yikes, my apologies. My sarcasm meter is totally busted today.

And for the record, I really do think it is dumb how we as a society are so anal about trying to be so politically correct with everything, even stuff as enjoyable as Christmas. I mean, my parents don't speak much English, but they still wish everyone Merry Christmas. They have never used "Happy Holidays" ever. And even though we're not Christian, we recongize Christmas as just a time to spend some quality time away from work and with family.

Believe me when I say this. We minorities and non Christians are not offended whatsoever about people wanting to celebrate Christian holidays. Why should we be anyways?
