Bumping this up. So far we have quite a few intrested. Rinks should be getting close with the brutal cold spell we are going through.

If anyone has a chance to go by any of the rinks that would be awesome. I can check the NW ones and Bridlewood this week.

Update; Going to head to a couple of the rinks this weekend and make a decision. Right now it looks like Signal Hill is one of the more popular choices. AC maybe I can get you to check it out this weekend?

Hoping with the milder tempertures to get something going for next week.

The rinks are also much emptier over the summer, so you can guarantee that everyone can play. Signal Hill becomes very, very busy over the winter, so people might not want to sign up because of that.

Ya I hear ya. Right now Im hoping to fill out one more goalie as well. I have one 3 buddies that can help us fill out some numbers (1 goalie) so I'm hoping we can get one more.

Just wanted to give a small update. I went and played Shinny last night after work at Varsity. Ice was pretty thin, but still really good. only one small area that had a bit of cracking in one corner.

I plan to check out a couple of the other ones this weekend and organize a game for next week.

I checked out Glamorgan yesterday.....it's usually an awesome rink for shinny.

The rink is currently locked up, but I'm guessing that's just while they get a nice base layer down. It's clearly being flooded/groomed.

Will check again in a couple days and post the results.

I ended up playing 3 times in the last week, 2 at the Varisty Acres rink and once at Bridlewood.

Ice was good at both, although the rink was shoveled and much more playable at Varsity.

This was balanced out by Bridlewood having a goalie (awesome) and ended up having some amazing 4 on 4 half boards game.

Sounds like most of the rinks are up. From what I have seen we should be able to grab 8-10 CP'ers and another couple of my buddies. Add in a likely few guys on the rinks and we should be able to get a game going.

Also I have one goalie, but if we could get another to commit we could really get a game going.

First game coming up folks!

Drove by Richmond/Knobhill this weekend and saw some skaters on the rink there. It was after dark and the lights were on, so I'm guessing it's open.

Is there any rinks in the Marda Loop area that flood regularly? I know the one off Elbow and 4th street does, but their boards suck (last time I was there they collapsed?)

How you guys feel about trying to get something going for this weekend? I have been out 4 times this week and it has been awesome. At Varisty last night we had 5 on 5 with 4 subs a side and a goalie last night.

So far I have played Varsity, Bridlewood and Silver springs (Which surprsingly was dead)

i'd be down as well!!

Just thought i might throw this in too. The rink in citadel was flooded during the cold spell, although there was a ton of snow on the ice.. the guy that i saw skating aroudn on there said the ice was pretty good, he just didnt have a shovel.. could be another location for the folks that prefer NW. I don't think it's too busy either

Id be in as well!

anyonebutedmonton, hothotheat and i went to silversprings last night and late night definitely would work best for a reasonable game... the later the better i think i would vote, but either way ill play

edit: by 10pm we had basically half the big silver springs rink to ourselves, by 10:30ish it was empty...

Arbour Lake is being plowed as we speak so that is an alternative.

I'm interested in playing (can't commit to weekly hockey) and prefer anywhere in the NW but I'm not picky.

I was just wondering about summer ball hockey and how some of you mentioned starting an ice hockey pick up game, and here is this thread!

Put me down as definitely interested, and I vote for the Signal Hill rink. If that is too busy, there are a few other rinks around the area that may not get as much traffic, although the ice conditions can vary wildly.

First is the Rutland Park outdoor rink at 40 AV SW and 31 ST SW. It is very near Mt. Royal University. Second one is at 2405 Glenmount Drive, which is just a little bit east of that Optimist's Athletic Park. (It should be called the Optimus Athletic Park, in honor of Optimus Prime.) Third one is the rink at the corner of Patterson Hill SW and Prominence Hill SW, behind the community association. I drive by this one during the winters, and it is barely ever used.

I think any of those is a good substitute in the event that it gets really busy @ Signal Hill, and they are all a short distance away.

As for nights without a Flames game, I opened up the Flame's schedule for Dec 2010 and the rest of 2011, and the breakdown for games played on those nights is as follows:

December 2010
Sundays: 1
Mondays: 3
Tuesdays: 2
Wednesdays: 0
Thursdays: 3
Fridays: 3
Saturdays: 1

January 2011
Sundays: 0
Mondays: 3
Tuesdays: 1
Wednesdays: 3
Thursdays: 0
Fridays: 3
Saturdays: 3

February 2011
Sundays: 2
Mondays: 2
Tuesdays: 2
Wednesdays: 2
Thursdays: 1
Fridays: 2
Saturdays: 2

March 2011
Sundays: 2
Mondays: 1
Tuesdays: 2
Wednesdays: 4
Thursdays: 2
Fridays: 1
Saturdays: 2

April 2011
Sundays: 1
Mondays: 0
Tuesdays: 0
Wednesdays: 1
Thursdays: 0
Fridays: 1
Saturdays: 1

So for December, we should definitely plan it for a Wednesday night. January, the best night would be on a Thursday, or Sunday (but I'd be busy on Sundays), February, Thursdays also, and March Monday or Friday.
