My apologies if a thread like this already exists. I searched the word "headphones" and came across a thread bashing NIN which got me so mad that I had to stop searching.
I've owned a pair of Grado 60s and 80s and they're both quite good in my opinion. I didn't hear much difference between the two, so I would recommend the 60s to save a few bucks.

If you really want to improve the sound quality, and if you plan to use these headphones off your desktop / laptop, then I would recommend an amp / dac like: http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconudac2/

This will make a much more tangible impact on sound quality than the incremental differences between different brands. Obviously if you just plan to use the headphones with your ipod alone, then the amp / dac isn't very useful.

I've also heard the Beats headphones as my brother recently brought over a pair. They do noise cancel but they also quite noticeably increase the gain in the bass at the expense of the higher frequencies. It was very noticeable for me. If you prefer a more neutral headphone, I would not recommend the Beats.

The Bose in-ear headphones are awful. I had a set for a couple years thinking they were awesome since I hadn't really tried any other higher end headphones but now that I have I look back and shake my head at the Bose ones.

Right now I have the Seinnheiser CX 400-II and love them. Great bang for your buck in my opinion.

+1 for the AKG's. In particular, the akg k240s (note the s) is what I have owned for years. They are a high end headphone but have low resistance, meaning they are more 'efficient' than most high end cans. So you can plug them into an ipod, whatever and they sound great.

Not to mention amazingly comfortable! They auto-adjust.. so sweet. A very honest, balanced sound. One thing is they aren't portable per say, or noise cancelling. But they are perfect for in home use.

Looks like there is an updated model.. yum..

Beware of certain high-end headphones. Without an amp, you won't be getting full value out of them.

Thanks to everyone that gave their suggestions. I ended up going with a pair of Grado SR60i's. Just started listening to them now (listening to The House that Dirt Built by The Heavy) and I'm pretty impressed by them so far considering the price I paid. Still have to break them in though so I think they will only get better!
