LOL Apparently you've hit on a topic that many people are really passionate about

BUMP!

OK, next question. Does anybody know where to buy a replacement D handle for a shovel? The shovel I bought last year works great, but the plastic handle has already broken. unfortunately trying to search for a replacement just brings up too many matches for just shovels.

My first thought would be USA or princess auto. I guess another place might be ribtor hardware.

My last idea would be to go to Home Depot, buy a cheap shovel of you think the d handle is remove able.

I must be missing the obvious- what is USA short for? (I don't think you mean I should go to the States and look for one there.)

This thread cracks me up a bit, I thought I was the only person with half an iota of passion about snow shovels, I drove across town just to buy one.

I bought this one a month ago at Princess Auto. I can clear the driveway in a third of the time but it's not the best for shoveling the snow up and onto the snow bank. You can use this to clear it to either side then grab the smaller one to heft it up. I could see it crapping out if I was trying to shovel that wet heavy snow. I like the handle and am already planning on rigging up a new shovel with sheet iron when the plastic inevitably breaks. The weight is a non issue for this type of shovel because it is pretty much just used for pushing snow.

Steel shovel

The price is the US price; the local store quoted me something closer to $50 CDN. They say it will be in next week; so I will find out how good it is then.
Where did you order it from? The website?

I actually ended up getting one at Lowes. The other store never called me back, and the one at Lowes was around $25.

It works well; just the handle is crap.

Those steel shovels are available at Calgary Co-Op, they have a display model at the customer service desk at the location on Richmond Road.
You can buy replacement blades, handles, and grips for the plastic shovels direct from the manufacturers website - see Garant.com and click on replacement parts.
I personally do not like the steel shovels as they drag too much on the concrete and catch too easily on cracks in the sidewalk etc. You can't beat a good quality plastic shovel but they do wear/break occasionally. There are various qualities of plastic as well, the good ones will last and work quite well. The best source I have found for shovels is Amazon.ca you can see the various models there and order the one that is comfortable for you. When you buy from box stores, your only selection is what's left of the ones that some buyer decided to stock, they usually stray away from the higher quality ones due to the higher price.
Better to have a good shovel and not need it than have a ####ty one to battle through a big storm.
