And maybe that is the reason they were starting him at 54k.

Well they gotta put all that traffic money somewhere.
Good for the cops though, they deserve it for the amount of crap they have to deal with.

Interestingly ( some might say depressingly ) those figures are very similar to, although slightly higher than, the salaries paid to federal prosecutors.

How do you figure? At a base salary of 54k, an 8 hour shift of OT is roughly $620 (if they're paid for a 12 hour shift) or $400 if they're paid for an 8 (which I would assume is more likely). At the top tier it's $950 for a 12 hour shift, and $630 for an 8 hour shift. And as pointed out, it wouldn't be OT on a regular shift.

Not sure how a 6 figure salary is excessive for having to work shift work, having to deal with hazardous materials, and a likely risk of injury/death...

You'll never convince someone who's not a cop how difficult it is to be a cop. That's a fact. You have to do the job to understand it.
That's all.

Yup, I have a buddy who went to Vegas for more money in 92, as of last year he has 2 stab wounds and a bullet hole in his arm, he has been shot at 6 times and he shot and killed a guy.
He actually wanted to move back a few years ago but his US born wife wouldn't come.

Not a bad idea to keep police salaries reasonably high to avoid corruption too. Every Third World country to which I have been has ridiculous correlation between police making no money and being forced to take bribes.

By no means did I say it was unjustified which is why I pointed out it is inline with the private sector, what I am saying is it might be a bit excessive given the base compensation from other municipalities especially as others have pointed out, after factoring in the ballooning overtime. Our cops are getting paid more than Toronto, Vancouver and NYPD (factoring current exchange rates) and it might be more cost effective with all the overtime to hire more cops to spread out the workload.
Toronto
Toronto Police Service base salary
Cadet in training $50,558 4th Class Constable $56,731 3rd Class Constable $64,839 2nd Class Constable $72,948 1st Class Constable $81,046http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/careers/salaryandbenefits.php
Vancouver
- Probationary Constable – $55,350
- 4th Class Constable (after 1 year) – $59,316
- 3rd Class Constable (after 2 years) – $63,261
- 2nd Class Constable (after 3 years) –$71,171
- 1st Class Constable (after 4 years) – $79,081
Salary Levels for 1st Class Constable
- after 10 years – $81,497
- after 15 years – $85,378
- after 20 years – $89,258
http://vancouver.ca/police/recruitin...-benefits.html
NYPD base rates
$46k first six months
$69k after 5 years
Though they do get a huge raise at 5.5 years
$90k after 5.5 years... I was I got an extra 20k for half a years experience.

Agreed. And I don't recall any news about corruption on the Calgary Police force, which is definitely a good thing and speaks volumes of the effectiveness of our boys in blue.

I do know when I worked for the City it was well known cops scheduled court time to maximize OT pay. The linked article would suggest things have not changed.
If constables are making up to, $70-$90,000 in overtime, as the article pointed out, the point I made is correct.

Read the article again if you think that's what it said. Or I'll make it easier for you and just tell you what it says.
A top detective can make up to that much in overtime. Not your regular constable.

While about a quarter of the force, earned more than $100,000 last year, the highest paid constable garnered about $163,000 while the top paid detective got $201,000.

54,000-83,000 base wage and they are making up to 163,000.
So that's 109,000 OT for a 5th class consty and 80,000 OT for a cop that's been there 5 yr's...
Am I missing something or are you just being a jerk ?

Cops don't schedule their own court, the court does.
You have no clue what you are talking about. PM me if you are interested in real numbers.

No I think you are just exaggerating the numbers. The highest paid constable made $163,000 with a quarter of the force making about $100,000 or slightly more, and the rest made less than $100,000.
I'm sure you can average out all those numbers and you'd get an average of about $25,000 maximum of overtime per constable.
A whole lot better than your $70,000-90,000 dollar number.

No, you are correct. Those numbers don't lie.
But, the OT is a combination of court time and extra duties like paving, flames games, stamps games, etc, etc. Fact, is the guy probably worked the OT as a second job.

And those OT gigs are covered by the company anyways, so it truly has no effect on city taxpayers if anyone is going that route.

No, he isn't correct.
He used the highest paid constable as a reflection of the whole police force.
When I'm not lazy I'm going to average out the numbers and post them.
