Starbucks Pike Place, I'm too lazy to brew it myself and SB is 200 yards from my crib.

My Cheapness >>>>>>>> My Lazyness
No way am I paying $5/day when I can pay $10/semester for the same thing
. . . in addition the 60 seconds it takes me to empty the reusable filter, refill the filter and press "start" on my coffee maker is far quicker than going even three feet out of my way to wait in line and pay for a coffee. I'm actually saving time in the morning but not buying coffee

Now if only they could find out a way to streamline getting the atomic roast without having to wait behind everyone ordering their latte's and such. Its hit or miss there when its not busy I love that place but will walk out about 25% of the time because its too crowded.

Lavazza is stale before it gets to the store shelves here. Same with Illy and Mauro. Absolutely terrible choices when we have some of the best roasters in the world in Western Canada, including Calgary.
The two best roasters in Calgary are Fratello and Phil & Sebastian. You can get Fratello's top-shelf beans at Caffe Crema, Beano, Insomnia, Good Earth (just check the roast date as some GE's don't do a good job of restocking- never buy beans more than a month post roast); P&S beans are sold at P&S's three cafes and now at Caffe Rosso.
Also outstanding (and fresh, and cheaper than Starbucks or that Illy/Mauro/Lavazza stale crap) are beans from Intelligentsia (available at deVille, Communitea in Canmore, and at Cookbook Co), 49th Parallel (Kawa, Bumpy's, Artigiano), Origins (Chiasso), and JJ Bean (Bumpy's, Ladybug).
Anything else is pretty much crap. As noted above, if you can't find the roast date (NOT the "best before" date), don't buy the coffee.

It's important (to me) that the roast date is plainly visible on the bag. I've had good Kicking Horse, and I've had kicking Horse that was obviously sitting around a warehouse for months. At $13-16 a pound, not worth the risk. I like Moutainview and Fratello has really stepped it up in the past couple of years. I don't live close to a P&S so I rarely buy their beans. Fratello beans I can buy in the same building I work in.

Phil & Sebastians has good coffee, but man do I ever hate their cafe. When it's busy, after ordering your coffee, you have to elbow your way past the people waiting in line and the people sitting at the cramped little tables to get to the cream/sugar, etc.
A chimpanzee with a mental deficiency could design a cafe better!

Having a hard time finding any of them in Calgary at a location convenient for me. Have been going to Chiasso lately.

So they actually roast the beans in Calgary at these places? What consistency are they when they get here? Are they dried but not roasted or still in their 'relatively fresh' state?
