FFS, I used to get a backhand across the face for mouth-breathing as a kid. But, to Dad's credit, I never mouth breath, and I feel bad for the MB's that didn't have a caring father like I did.

When I was a kid we got both.
A spanking and a grounding, and by grounding we're talking a week with no T.V. no playing with your friends, you came home did chores, ate dinner and studied period.
There was no hour long time out, it was physical back breaking labour, physical punishment and studying.
I once got grounded for a month.
Later on the physical punishment vanished, and my folks didn't need to ground me much, and it was mostly amped up chores. You learn a lesson after painting the house, or sanding the back yard deck with a sand paper block. One day I had to pull a tree down.

Same with us, mom had the wooden spoon until I got home before her and ran that thing through a bandsaw.
Dad originally was a couple of swats with the belt, unil I stuck a book down the back of my pants pre spanking and the swat sounded like a shotgun blast.
I can't wait until my boys are old enough for hard labour. Spanking works for shock value at that age, but I've noticed with my daughter that at around 5 the spanking just isn't that effective anymore. There are plenty of priveledges to take away at 5 or 6, though, and I've found that far more effective than spanking at that age.
I remember laughing when my mom spanked me. I don't remember laughing when I had to shovel the walks for all of the neighbours in the cul-de-sac.

See I don't get this. Why does there have to be a minimum age? My wife keeps telling me that mowing the lawn at 3yrs old is not appropriate.
