You are absolutely wrong if you don't think restaurant work looks good on a resume. I know one could word any job and it would look good, but with restaurants there is no stretching of the truth. Many employers look for past restaurant experience because they know it is extremely fast paced, dynamic and thus stressful job.

The other good thing about restaurants (at least IMO) is that it shows you're individual competence. You can talk in an interview about your section being your business and taking pride (and being rewarded) for your own hard work.

Also, the chicks are hot and some of them have sweet staff parties so you can extend your social network.

Edit: I just re-read what i posted and 'social network' isn't a euphemism, I swear.

Also, any job that provides you with some "customer service" experience is a good thing.

Ahh I disagree with almost everything most people have said on here. When this guy goes to look for a new job when he graduates, no employer is going to be impressed by the fact that he was the "night bar leader" at Earls. Give your head a shake. When we hire students, it's based mostly on their grades and whether the applicant has any experience related to the job. The best thing a student can do is get a summer job or a coop term in a position that's applicable to what they want to do once they've graduated.

Personally, getting a part-time job as a bank teller on weekends or something is probably one of the best things you could do right now.

Wow, really? You must be in a specific industry, because when I hire, grades are like 10% of it. It's all about experience, attitude and and a willingness to learn. I've found that people with perfect grades aren't always the best picks because they either have a sense of entitlement or lack business / social skills imperative to the job.

Calgary Flames are looking for a scorer. It's only 3 nights a week, not much effort needed and it pays well.

Best of luck in finding a job. I agree with the people that say it is best to find something in your area of expertise. Having contacts is the best way of going about to do that. For now I'd take any job you can get and then at the same time explore all options to land a job in your field. The University's have a career center, there are usually job fairs listed in the paper.

I worked at Telus for a few years and I have contacts in Calgary. I can see if there are openings for you that the general public doesn't know about.

Thanks!

For reference ive worked in resteraunts before, moved up into team leader positions etc. Ive done sales of high end massage products (like 6000 dollar products) so i think i have a pretty good understanding of personal relationships and how to be a decent salesman.

Ill say it right now that i dont think grades are BIG determining factor in a job, ive met many a A+ student who cannot do simple things like go out for a business lunch because they simply do not know how to socialize or present themsevles in a professional manner.

Im hoping my attitude and my small amount of previous experience will help me to get a job. Ive also worked downtown before doing AP/AR stuff for some summers but just looking to get a part time job is VERY difficult.

The problem is my lack of contacts and my lack of exact experience, like i applied for a bank job but they specifically said that they only wanted applicants who had experience working in a bank (Sucks). I also dont feel like i have many contacts within businesses downtown, im far too proud to ask my father or his friends for jobs, i feel like i need to do stuff on my own but getting your foot in the door is the hardest part.

Anyways, thanks guys, and Oilfan if you have anything that would be really sweet. Thanks!
