Chuck being completely over-the-top awesome completely made up for it though

In the promo for the next 4 episodes, we do see Chuck talking to Ellie about searching for their mom. So I don't see that arc lasting the entire season.

NBC isn't advertising Chuck? Well looks like they aren't giving it much hope then. Dammit! Damn you NBC!
At least give us the back 9 episodes of the season.

I think the expectation was that this was going to be the last year anyways. They've destroyed two major enemies, killed off Chucks Dad in theory and are about to clear up the rest of the family secrets. I'd say there's nothing else left to do.

24 had 8 seasons all having the same exact plot and it was still decent by the end.
Chuck can go longer than 4 seasons.

Season 5 - The Return of the Ring

to me I was a little dissapointed in the Ring's quick demise, they could have done so much more with it, but the destruction of that organization really fell flat for me.
This was a rogue organization fighting a shadow war against its own organization.
I always thought that the history of General Belisarius could have applied.
The Genius CIA head or NSA head trying to clean out corruption and bad government policy within his organization eventually tries to clean it out by creating a rogue organization inside of it, that would subvert the saying "Any path to victory" eventually bought down by Chuck after they find out that Beckman was also rogue. Shamed and humiliated he later reforms an organization that is not interested in reforming the ring for the purpose of strengthening U.S. security, but to destroy the CIA or the U.S. government out of a sense of vengence.
Then you could have extended the life of the ring and made it far less cartoony and far more lethal.

That is one of the problems with a show always on the brink of being canceled. They can't take quite as long for a story to develop since they don't know if they are going to get another season.
So each season they try to make it so if they are canceled it doesn't leave a lot hanging.
And although they killed off Chuck's dad, perhaps the remnants of the Ring saved him the same way they saved Shaw; so I wouldn't count him totally out yet.

It's already on a limited budget (which deserves kudos for how they've still had some amazing action scenes) and with NBC's refusal to do any sort've promotion for this season pretty much, it does feel like this will be it. So I'm going to enjoy every last moment of this season, truly one of my all time favourite shows!

Another solid episode with a great tone and one of the best lines in Chuck history issued by creepy Jeff at the end to Ellie.

Was a really good episode. They sure are getting a lot of stars or semi-stars guest starring in each episode. Stone Cold and Nicole Ritchie next week, w00t w00t!
Oh and Yvonne without the dress....drool....drool....
And Jeff and Lester are back!

Hot damn is Ellie ever gorgeous. This show could be nothing but her walking around her living room for an hour, and I'd still sit here glued to my TV.

Which line was that? My favourite line of the episode was "I think my water just broke."
