Hit on the teacher (assuming, it's a woman). Grade 1 teachers are the best... *

If they ask you a question like "is the earth really old" make sure to reply: "you breccia"

Igneous is bliss, make sure to keep that in mind if you're caught hitting on the teacher.

If you get stopped or distracted, when you get back on track: Shale we continue?

Profanity. Lots and lots of profanity. (If you're worried about this talk, you'll never be worried about talking to 1st graders ever again.)

If you can see they are getting restless that is the time to have them ask questions.

Kids that age can't sit more than 20 min without needing some sort of physical movement, so if your talk is long break it up by having them stand up and do some kind of quick activity that requires movement.

bring prizes for them to keep if they answer questions right.

I'd say candy, but you'd probably offend someone these days with that.

I like the suggestion about showing a few things copper is made into, my grade 1 kid is insatiable about knowing how things are made and how they work.

Cool. We own a gold claim out there. Odd little town, but kinda grows on you.

- you need to find a way to keep their attention and focussed on what you are saying. Their attention span at that age is minimal.

- don't give them the rocks until the end of your talk, or that's all they will be thinking about.

- get the kids to form a semi-circle, around you at the front of the room, sitting on the floor. You should be at approximate eye level.

- use one or more simple diagrams that you can speak to eg. a cross-section of the mine, etc.

- keep it short and simple.

- you could ask them if they have any questions at the end of your talk.

- it would probably help if you gave them a cloth sample bag to put the rock in.

As a geologist, I used to take cubs to Drumheller to collect dinasaur bones back in the 70's. On one trip they filled up over 100 sample bags.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.
Well done sir! I was going to send this to my sister who is a V P at an elementary school but you hit the nail on the head!

They are too young for cleavage and dyke jokes.

I did the rounds myself a few years back, kids loved the photos and the rocks. Make sure none are that large, since they will be dropped. If you can, grab a few handfuls of polished rocks and let each kid have a few.

It certainly is an odd little town-been there for over 3 1/2 years-the golf course is the best part of it..

Anyways, the talk went really well and I was able to dazzle them with a piece of magnetite and a magnetic "2" from their magnet board as well as the floating piece of pumice.
A special thank you to flamesfever as the suggestions were absolutely perfect!
