Any GOP candidate that strays too much towards the middle is going to get a primary challenge from a Rand Paul tea party type. If a southern Republican came out in favor of gay marriage, he wouldn't be the candidate for long.

A perfect example is Mccain shifting further to the right during this last primary

Mormons obviously, but they don't have near the influence the evangelicals do.

I agree on an overall scale, but I think people actually underestimate how big of an impact that relatively small portion of the GOP base has on presidential elections. With the way that the Electoral College works small shifts in a few places turn the entire game, plenty of those places have strong religious right bases. It's rather staggering that the decision of a few hundred people in the Orlando area can basically change the course of the nation for 4 years.

What about the staggering amounts of money the Mormons used to sway the gay vote in California?

Mormon members have contributed more than a third of the $15.4 million raised by ProtectMarriage.com.

^It wasn't meant to goad him into responding. I was honestly curious to see if others anticipated his posts in threads of this nature.

I also anticipate posts from other forum members in certain topics too for their entertainment, informative, thought-provoking, etc. qualities. Photon on science, Thor on religion, Jetsfan on gender relations, CaptianCrunch and worth on military history, etc. Everyone has their pet topics. For example, I wouldn't be surprised if your member profile were on the first page of a google search for the word "government."

If it weren't for strategic voting, the Republicans wouldn't be one party. I doubt the Democrats would be either. First past the post encourages strategic voting though.

The Mormons have been discussed at length in our last few long gay marriage debates while you've been away.

You should check out the Mormon proposition documentary about their involvement in prop 8 and long before that in defeating a bill in Hawaii to give same sex rights.

I know CB isn't the most widely liked member on here, but he does make the off-topic section of the forum pretty interesting. His views on religion as especially very interesting to read.

I'm not trying to pick on you, but there are a variety of different viewpoints on CP that make this place one of the best forums out there. And I think too many people try to label CB as an ignorant moron simply because he has a different outlook on certain things.

So in short, it matters to Canadians whether they acknowledge it or not.
