The idea that a vegetarian is healthier just because insurance gives a discount is spurious reasoning; correlation does not equal causation. It could just as easily mean that vegetarians in general pay better attention to their health.
The idea that it's better because the energy from the sun is somehow fresher, rather than second hand sunlight, is of course stupid. The energy in food is stored chemically regardless of if it's in a plant or animal. It's not magically sitting in the plant. And from a pure "energy density" point of view meat is better.. is it better to eat 100 plants, or 1 antelope who's eaten those 100 plants for you (VASTLY oversimplified yes of course )?
And no we aren't light, I gave up there.
That said, my doctor tells me to eat less meat, esp. less red meat, so even the premise of this article is flawed.

There is a point in that 'meat' is being raised in conditions that they never were supposed to be subject to. Outside of that the article is completely out to lunch.
I couldn't disagree more, the article is far from out to lunch. Lunch requires meat, hence the term "lunch meat"

Hahahaha thank God... I started reading this because someone emailed it to me saying it had some good points... and I was thinking this is a total crack pot hahahah.
#1 reason not to eat meat: scientific studies have shown a vegetarian diet to be more healthy, resulting in reduced risk of heart disease and cancer among other benefits.
Recent studies are coming out and saying that saturated fat isn't as bad as we thought it was.
But, I'm still of the opinion that meat that has been subject to antibiotics, crappy like conditions, steroids, and various types of preventive medicines, not to mention being corn fed which increases the health risk substantially isn't as healthy as people think it is.

Meh, I was just going by what I found on wikipedia (consider the source):
Evidence suggests that vegetarians are generally healthier and live longer than non-vegetarians. They have lower rates of coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis[1], dementia[2] and some forms of cancer. Vegetarian diets tend to be rich in carbohydrates, omega-6 fatty acids, dietary fibre, carotenoids, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium and magnesium. They are generally low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal protein.
Of course, I counter with this: if eating meat wasn't healthy, then humans would not have evolved to find it so delicious!
I seem to recall it was eating protein rich meat of scavenged animals spurred our greatest physical and intellectual evolution.
Hell, our ancestors began making stone tools specifically in order to crack open the bones of scavenged animals in order to get at the super protein rich bone marrow.
If you think about it, everything on this planet is sustained by the energy from the sun. Plants convert sunlight to useable energy through photosynthesis. It then trickles down to herbivores who eat plants. Carnivores and Omnivores then eat meat to get this energy. The idea is, each time this energy converted from the sun is passed down, a part of it gets lost from thermal energy.
So in theory, you get the most energy from the sun if you eat plants as it is only passed down once, so it is more efficient if we eat plants rather than animals. Now, the only downside is, if you're a vegetarian, you have to eat a lot more varieties of plants and plant products in order to get the same type of nutrients as you get from meat.
I do sympathise with the "OMG suffering animals" aspect, a necessary evil I guess you would say. If we could grow the meat without growing the rest of the cow/chicken I'd be cool with that.

*Waits for peter12 to weigh in* ...
But seriously... this is a creepy idea... growing a steak without an animal?

I could have sworn the evil company in the TV show Better Off Ted already tried this!

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure we were created with the ability to speak English right away.

My uncle quit eating meat about 25 years ago. Last year he nearly died from kidney failure from a lack of protein. Most people who become vegeterian don't replace the loss of protein adequately.
