EEEeerrrgghhhhh.... the Hip. Perhaps the most overplayed Canadian band out there. Everytime they appear on the radio or TV, I instantly turn it off. But I digress.
They really are/were overplayed...but hot damn that Gord Downie is a genius. Their latest album, We Are the Same, is amazing. They've transitioned nicely from rock band to an almost indie pop/folk band. The Depression Suite on We Are The Same is just a great tune.
Fata this crap music. Give me some hip and led Zeppelin and thats all I need. If you are white and from Canada, Hip and Zeppelin are all you need, all other music is for fags.

Baaaaaaaaaaaack on topic.... catchy song!
That's awesome man... if you enjoy them, that's great. I'll never criticize the music itself; just the fact that they are incredibly overplayed on media outlets.

Overplayed because Canadian Media is regulated to play Canadian Media. So if we're forced to listen to Canadian Music, would you rather have...
Or...
I'll take The Hip 99 times out of 100, thank you very much.

I just wouldn't take any of them. I'd go read a book.
But to be fair, that's quite the twist you put on there. If I have to listen to a Canadian band, I'd listen to Death From Above 1979, City and Colour, some Deadmau5... but you didn't list those. You listed Serial Joe. Now... go to the corner and hang your head in shame.
I listen to CBC3 a lot. They only play Canadian music, so you get far more than the 5-6 Canadian bands that get played on commercial radio. CANCON does not work - it only props up the Canadian bands that really don't need the support.

Fair enough... but my point was that based on mainstream media play in Canada, you're going to get more Serial Joe than City and Colour. Those who turn off the radio when they're sick of the Hip can find some great artists out there... Canadian or not.
My point was more direct to those who complain about what they hear on the radio. And right now, you're going to hear more commercial than 'good' music.
As was pointed out earlier in this thread, and in many other threads, you hear more Nickleback and Tragically Hip because they are more commercially viable, and the radio industry isn't about finding new tallent, it's still about making money, and if 80% of their listeners like Nickleback, and only 10% know who Deadmau5 are, they're going to play more Nickleback, so they can go to their advertizers and say 80% listen... not 10% listen.
And to relate it back to the thread, stations that fit the format are going to find a way to get "Forget You" on the station, cause it's got a buzz right now. It's why on AMP, you'll hear Eminem's "Hate How You Lie" every hour damn near. There's more of a population that if you're going to hear Canadian music on the radio, they would rather hear The Tragically Hip and Nickleback. That's just the way it is.
