Advice on buying bed

I had a thread on here a while ago about a mattress, I went a smidge more expensive than I wanted and got a pillow top, wow is that comfortable.

Its alot higher up then my old bed was which made gigadee gigadee times more difficult to get ad since there was no more just flopping on the bed but one of the best investments I ever made.

The only thing I dont like is that the damn bottom sheet never stays tucked in. No matter what, just me, me+1 - the sheet never stays tucked. I have tried 3 different sheets and all the same thing.

I never bought a bed until last year. We got ours at Sleep Country during a sale. We tried out every one in the store, and the one my wife found was the only one not on sale (naturally). Anyways, we didn't even ask, and the sales guy took 50% off because he had 1 left over from the Mix and Match sale. $3K bed was now $1500, just like that. It has been the best bed we could ever ask for.

Bottom line advice would be:

1. Do not pay anywhere near full price from Sleep Country. Negotiate, ask about sales, walk away if you have to.
2. Get King Size if you have a wife/live in gf.
3. Do not shop by Brand alone, treat all brands the same based on comfort.
3. Get independent coil so you don't feel her move. Seriously, I will not go back to those old style beds.

lol well I don't know how you "try" out beds but I did just mean lay down and see if you find it comfortable. Although him and the gf could try something different and have a story to tell.

Do NOT pay retail, and you should even get them to throw in a couple of those "$100+" pillows on top of whatever discount you get. (The pillows are awesome comfortable!)

The markups are insane and the big stores will have clearances at many times of the year. Unless you pay 2/3 or less of retail you are getting ripped off.

So my wife and I went to the Brick mattress store today at the brick and we saw a king size we liked. It's sticker was $2399 but on sale for $1799. I tried to talk the guy down but he was not having any of it - he claimed when they are on sale the crazy markup is reduced down close to cost so there is no wiggle room.

Is this a case of the sticker cost being inflated so the sale price looks amazing OR is he an honest salesman?

The mattress was a Sealy Titanium Perfomance DS - if that means anything to anyone.

Not to sure, but when I went the Bay, they had a mattress regular price $2,300, reduced to $1,100. I was able to haggle them down to $850. If they're willing to go that low, then the mark up must be crazy high.

Spend the extra money the first time, and something you will be happy with for years. Nothing worse than buying something only to regret not getting a better model, especially when it is a longterm purchase (IE. myself not getting a 60' and settling for the 52' tv.).

When my girlfriend and I moved out here to Victoria, we took as little as possible to make the move cheaper. Our old bed sucked. It was cheap, old, and worn out :P

Anyways, when we got here, we got a pretty expensive bed - our friends had the same one - and it was a INCREDIBLE difference. I honestly thought we would be pissing away money on going big like we did - but I would recommend going big for a bed if you can afford it - it makes a world of difference.

If you sleep on your stomach at all, don't go for a pillow top, get an extra firm.

A pillow top feels comfortable for a night or two, but your back will start to die a slow and agonizing death.

I paid way to much for my glorified table top. I wish I read about the haggling part before I bought mine

Just as important as the mattress and box spring is the frame support that the box spring sits on. Get one with a good support down the middle as well as supports on both sides. Really important for extending the life of your mattress and box spring.

And rotate and invert the mattress at least twice a year, especially if 2 of different weights will be in the bed.

Slightly off topic, but does this haggling apply to all furniture? Or just mattresses, I'm in the market for a new couch set....

The one thing that happens with the Brick- they will have some mattress sets that they are not allowed to negotiate on. Usually it will be one of the ones they rotate through as their "1/2 price mattress"; just because they have to make sure they sold it at regular price prior to putting it on for half price.

And sa226- yes there is some wiggle room in furnature as well. The hierarchy of markup is as follows:

1) Monster cable
2)
3)
4) Speakers
5) Mattresses
6) furnature
7) Major appliances
8)
9) Major electronics

A typical mattress display starts with single beds for kids and works up to the obscenely priced king size set priced in the thousands...

I bought a set and after awhile I didn't like it because my arms would fall asleep, too much pillow? So I had to buy another set, this time being more careful I found out the "kids" single mattresses also come in king size. I also discovered there is only a couple different coil configurations. So shop around and consider other models.

Had a buddy who returned their tempurpedic bed. He described it as sleeping in a hammock as the mid section sank in more than the legs and upper body. I think that he got it a Sleep Country where they have that try it for 30 days thing...nice to know that they do honor returns.

Halstead in Deerfoot Meadows make good beds. That's where we bought. They have inserts so half of our king bed is soft and the other half is firm. The inserts are replaceable too...

King is the way to go...however, make sure that you can get it in your house....
