This was the eleventh time they held this competition, and the first time something like this happened. Weird thing is, the temperature is really not that spectacular, many Finns have at least tried temperatures like that, although very few would tolerate it with the amount of water they use in this competition.
I'm guessing this has something to do with the literally record-breaking heatwave in Finland. The competitors propably had lost significantly more fluids before the contest than anyone was aware, and/or there was a lot more humidity in the sauna to start with than normal.
For comparison, the other competitor, who had bad burns and was hospitalized, has a record of 16 minutes in that kind of a temperature, and I've heard that the 6 minute limit, while being a high one, is not exactly unknown of in this competition.
In any case, the organizers stated this was the last time they will hold this event, which is obviously a good thing.
Sauna is not for sport, it's a place for cleansing and relaxation.
