Most cities/states that I've been to don't allow stickers/distinguishing marks on the car in any way. It's practically a flashing neon light to car burglars.

Quite True Frank, Certainly in the states and maybe places like Toronto, not so much here. The car was here last night, from what I saw it didn't even have fleet stickers but I didn't really look too closely. His wife said they did ask about the car when they crossed into Canada, they admitted it was a rental... so beats me...

Anyway as an update he spent about 4 hours with the border guys - having Tea and catching up on old times I'm sure - before they let him cross... car is back in the US and should be at rental company tomorrow, when we were able to tell them where he was they said they would not call the cops on him, so they say... so .. who knows... thats all I know, I didn't talk to him, if there was fines he didn't tell the wife... lol

Good to hear that things seem to be sorted out. Fingers crossed that they continue that way.

If he has a pre-paid credit card I'm going to assume he has a pre-paid cell phone, which is why it doesn't work in the states.

So here's one related to this....

I'm a Canadian citizen (but legal alien living in the US) who will be going to Ontario and renting a car. However I would like to go to Detroit to visit my grandfather. Is it a problem to cross the border into the US (ie. the country I live in), and then cross-back again to drop the car off in Ontario?

Seems to be an issue from if it was flipped (ie, Canadian renting in the US, and then crossing to Canada), but not sure about my case.

Just make sure your rental agreement states you can cross back over the border. They may charge you extra for that service but at the border it could cause problems if you don't have that clause on your rental agreement.
