I've only been running WSE for 2 weeks though, so I'll reserve judgement until I've had more time with it.

Microsoft Security Essentials
I don't really know much about this stuff, but it's always being recommended by tech journalists and people in the industry.

The non-persistent VM is the greatest thing in the world - its a VM, fully configured, that doesn’t save disk writes across sessions. Each time you use it, when you close the VM, the writes are lost and it reverts to its previous state. In essense, it can never get infected other than for the duration of a single use.
The performance of VMWare workstation is so good right now on decent hardware with lots of RAM, that there’s almost zero excuse to do anything with untrusted code outside a VM.
Test in your VM, and promote software to the native side of your machine when it passes muster.

Solid, I'm going to take a look for this when I get home. This is in Win7 I'm assuming? Where do you find it?

Nice, I'll keep an eye on this. I've noticed some wonkiness with Kaspersky as of late, too, but I can't be sure if it's really Kaspersky or just the typical Windows meltdown that always occurs after the 3 month mark (after a clean install).

Am I reading things right on that graph that there seems to be a difference between Kapersky Internet Security and the normal scan only Kapersky? It would seem so.

I've been using MSE since I installed windows 7 last fall on my three computers. I also have Malwarebytes. I haven't had any problems and it's pretty unobtrusive.

Everybody else covered what to do, but good job! Norton & McAffee are basically viruses themselves.

Here is a nice graph that was posted in Oilkillers thread.

Avast should always auto-update itself. It should never bug you to download a new version.
I should really build a virtual machine one day but for now, I use Avast as background proactive always on detection and MalwareBytes and Spybot scans to manage vulnerabilities/spyware/trojans.

Good tip there, although isn't it true a virus downloaded to a VM session could still infect computers over the network? Or write itself to a USB drive? Granted the chances of having a problem are greatly reduced but I don't know if it's completely bulletproof.
I use Avast at home, and MSE at work. I thought MSE was legal at work so long as the Windows install was genuine but I just learned this is not true. I should switch - anyone know of a decent free-for-corporate use a/v?

Why wouldn't it be legal?

It's in the EULA
INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.- Use. You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices in your household for use by people who reside there or for use in your home-based small business.
They sell Forefront Client Security for business. I guess just like any other AV company - they offer the free from home use in the hopes users will upgrade to a paid product.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. I never realized how much traffic the Tech Talk has.
Looks like this conversation can head over to OilKiller's thread.

Well, the biggest real world difference for me so far is boot up time after you login. With Kaspersky, there was a lag before I could open up my MSN and Firefox browser but now there is no lag with WSE.
Speaking in performance, WSE is much better, but for actual Virus/malware protection I have no idea yet.
