Not sure if that is possible on a 5 year old necro-bumped thread. In future people, please do not be afraid to start a new thread.

We use to take our family vehicles to a guy that does it out of his garage. He was working on my moms early 2000 Ford Expedition and needed to change the spark plugs. Anyone who knows about these motors and spark plugs knows where this is going. One of them takes all the threads with it and in the process of trying to re-thread he drops his tool into the motor or something...I forget exactly what happened. But the motor had to be pulled from the vehicle. It's almost impossible to take out a motor from an Expedition so what they do instead is unbolt the whole body and lift it the air and work on the motor this way. Seriously the whole body.

Spoiler!

Unsurprisingly this is also impossible for a guy working out of his garage at home to do. Also unsurprisingly, guys working out their garages are not interested in paying for the tow to a dealership or paying for lifting most of an Expedition in the air.

Anyways, off topic for this thread but my mom took excellent care of this vehicle. When she sold it, it was 12 years old, with low kms and didn't have a paint chip on it. Interior was spotless too. But the resale on this type of vehicle was terrible. A mother bought it for her son who apparently wasn't a good driver and had already crashed two other vehicles. So she thought it would be safer to drive a large vehicle. Safer for her son, not for everyone else on the road. The vehicle is huge and you can't see the front corners at all and the backup sensors weren't reliable. I can only assume he ruined the vehicle. Makes me wish I bought it for myself for road trips/camping/towing.

Time for an ongoing "I'm looking for an honest mechanic" thread.

Just because you don't understand cars, doesn't mean they are all scumbags.

So a good Toyota mechanic will also be a good Honda, Mazda mechanic, right?

I just take my car to Canadian Tire now for checkups.
Should this have been green text?

No offence, but you did say it was a Matrix you were getting serviced, right?

Burnitor, you guys just had a crappy mechanic I guess. I drive a 2004 F150 Triton v8 and he replaced all my plugs without a worry. knowing the issues with the plugs I left him the truck while i was away for the week so he could take him time.

My Toyota Mechanic works on our F150 and dodge Journey.

Engines pretty much all work the same, i think the biggest difference is each brand may have shortcuts for access that you become accustom to.

Service shop labour is one of the biggest rip offs because they have you bent over the barrel unless you can do it yourself or know someone.

Maybe or just bad luck with the repair or a bit of both. But my main point was I doubt many backyard mechanics are going to pay a couple thousand dollars out of pocket to fix their mistake.
