I remember a really bad one in the early nineties that, IIRC, was the most costly disaster in Canadian history until recently (form a $$ perspective). My folks' place needed new shingles, as did many other houses in Calgary.

It must've been in 1996. My parents were were out for dinner and my brother and I were watching Cutthroat Island on VHS (movie came out in 1995). It was one of our first times being home alone without a sitter, and the storm scared the S**T out of us.
Looking at this Government website ( http://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/res/em...l-sig-eng.aspx), it totaled nearly $400 million in damages for 2 hailstorms within a week.
1996 Estimated damage: $303 million + $87.8 million
for second hail storm map
Calgary, AB / July / Hail storm caused heavy flooding and extensive damage to property and automobiles. A second hail storm six days later added another.

Looking out the window in Sundance I can't see anything significant. I'm worried too, my car is underground at work and street parked at night. Praying this doesnt turn into panel denting David Hale.

I'm looking west over chinook mall right now. Where once was clean blue sky is now the forboding formation of what will undoubtedly come off like "The Day After Tomorrow."

Live about an 1.5 hour east of Calgary and the once perfect blue sky is now dark and it feels like it has cooled down at least 5 degrees when I was outside last an hour.

Came out of nowhere here. Sky was clear then a shower came... sky looked ruthless but only a little bit of wind and hail. Radar showing some bad stuff to the north and there's toonie sized hail from Picture Butte to Vulcan.

Here is that cell that was east of town, "Wee in YYC" got the shot from the Westjet building. According to the dispatchers there it was topping out around 57,000'

So that's a storm cell, eh? I just thought it looked a bit like a mushroom cloud.

Just got back from following that cell. I caught up with it down around High River and followed it to Drumheller. Impressive to look at but not a great storm to chase, it never really got going. From the looks of things none of the cells in southern/cental Alberta did. Some dude called 660am and said it put out baseball sized hail near Strathmore but I never saw any.
