I don't know about the rest of you guys, but this was another one of my favorites in it's day:
back when i was in college i really wanted to play that game. i went to ebay and for like 35 bucks i got the cartridge only and it had the kids name written on it in marker. it was the most economical choice as the full package with box and guide at the time was at least 70 bucks. i played the crap out of it even though at the time it was already a 10 year old game. i still play it once in a while just for the memories.
though i've still never managed to get a gutsy bat from a kraken. that was the one item i could never get. though i also dreaded having to battle starmen to get the sword of kings. i don't remember the exact odds, but i always seemed to defy them in how long it would take me to get it.
Having never played a RPG before the xbox 360 I missed a lot of the early ones. The earliest I had was Bulder's Gate 2 which is an amazing game.
The Mass Effect series is becoming my favorite series for games, I love how in-depth these games are and I hope the 3rd one is even better than 2.
Oblivion and Fallout are both classics in their own right, but I don't spend myself playing them non-stop like my brother does.
For me, the ultimate RPG was Diablo 2, it ate up my childhood. It may not be strictly RPG, it is more of a hack 'n slash RPG, but it is still my favorite. No other game has had me addicted like that game has.

IIRC, the Gutsy Bat was dropped by bionic kraken in the cave of the past....I think it was about a 1/128 probability

thats pretty much what i was remembering as well. i was always wondering if i saved from that point and just replayed till i got it if it would work. generally you only could battle a couple before having to keep going.
I bought the Xenogears: CREID CD. Awesome CD. Mitsuda is great. I believe he is also the composer for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, which also have killer soundtracks.
Correct. He also did the first Xenosaga, and Yuki Kajiura and someone did the other ones.
I love the Creid CD. Favorite game album ever, seriously. And Xenogears itself, man that game had seriously ugly sprites but I love it. Wish I still had an English copy.
This thread deserves mention of the Shin Megami Tensei series - the least cute, fluffy JRPG series I can think of. =P Especially Nocturne and the two Digital Devil Sagas - all PS2 games and my three favorites, though there's a ton of SMT titles in total.

Any chance you could fire me over an mp3 of "Flight"?
I just bought Knights of the Old Republic off Kijiji tonight since I like Bioware RPGs.
I liked Dragon Warrior VII and VIII, but can't get into playing the ones on the DS. Screen is too small. So I'm gonna hate IX, so I probably won't waste the money.
Someone mentioned FFT - that is my favorite game of all time. I love strategy RPGs, and FFT is one of the earliest and one of the best. Too bad Square-Enix f'd up the series with the Advance spin-offs. The themes of FFT were very adult, whereas the Advance games were made for 10 year olds.
BTW - Second favorite game of all time: Bard's Tale.
Didn't like Neverwinter Nights - you didn't start out with a party and therefore didn't have people to compliment your skills.
Didn't like Icewind Dale - too much hack and slash vs solving problems and running quests.
Never played Planescape Torrment. I wonder how much I'd have to pay on eBay to get it....
I bought it through Amazon.ca a couple months ago for like 20 dollars. Definitely worth it.

"See you again in Shadowrun 2".
**** you DataEast.
That was an epic game.
I Remember hearing about a shadowrun being released for the 360 and was REALLY excited that Shadowrun was making a comeback. I was quite disappointed when I found out that the Shadowrun they were releasing for the 360 was an entirely different game then the one i loved for the SNES.
I'd LOVE to see a game developer bring that series back from the grave and put it on a current gen console.

I love this game!
I remember getting this from Futureshop back in 2000, it was on sale for $19.99 with a $20.00 mail in rebate. For the price of tax on twenty bucks and a stamp this was the greatest value purchase of my life!
Selling my Dragon Warrior collection (when I was about 12) has haunted me almost every day since. Thanks for the screenshot.....awesome memory/way to start the day!

Demon's Souls is my favourite RPG of the past couple years or so. Of all time, it'd be hard to say, but the two that immediately spring to mind are FFVII and Chrono Trigger.
I'm currently playing Dragon Age:Origins which is quite a bit of fun as well.
