Before you did?# If it's metro pop you still got about 300,000 to go.# The 900,000+ pop of Edmonton is including suburbs way the heck out there...
|
I think Edmonton included Red Deer, Grand Prairie, and Fort McMurray in their population count. They're desperate about hanging out with the big boys. It makes a person almost feel sorry for them ... and then they're dumb enough to say something really, REALLY stupid ... and life returns to normal.
The dumbest part of the survey is the impact of weather. Calgary gets slammed for being a winter climate even though we have FAR more days of sunshine then Vancouver (Or any other city in Canada). Furthermore, i would MUCH rather live in a city with seasons (including a cold winter) then one without. It is the type of thing that should be mentioned but not penalized for.
I LOVE winter, everything about it. And i am surprised how when i say it how many people deep down agree with me after a little thought.

That's a heck of a lot of communities and people the city likes to include in it's metro pop. The actual population of Edmonton according to their own civic census is still less that 700,000.
|
Vancouver's population is only around 600K, and it's metero is around 2M..
Well that 600,000 is a bit iffy, it is hard to get accurate responces from druggies.... getting free heroin.
But Edmonton is an allright city, but it seems a bit colder than Calgary mainly due to the river in Calgary not being brown, and the mountains be closer. A few more attractions in Calgary also (which don't involve malls).
Both cities have some strong points though.

A few more attractions in Calgary....oh boy, here we go again...
For climate, I can argue that there's more precipitation in Edmonton, which provides better summers......Calgary has very drumheller type of soil......
Anyways, that's it, hopefully this doesn't start into a p*ssing match again.

Very cool Sundeep you come in here guns a blasing with a tiny post count, and no facts to back up your assertions and think everyone will listen to you.
It's a CALGARYPUCK forum. Of course were going to be a bit pro Calgary, Unless you give us facts not to be, it's going to be a tough sell. But I have talked with other EDM guys in PM and they agree it's a p*ssing match, yet they don't deny any of the actual points in this thread. (We're bigger, more metropolitan, known better worldwide)
I have agreed both cities are similar and both are great cities to live in. But I'm sorry. Edmonton is Calgary's little cousin in the world right now.

Bigger and more metropolitan, yes. Absolutely.
Better known worldwide though? I don't know about that. I think people tend to know one or the other...sometimes both...depends on their interests. I wouldn't say Calgary's known that well outside of countries that have excessive amounts of winter sports, rodeo, and oil.

Mr Mustard ( cool name, do you shove a ten-bob note up your nose? ) its true, the North Saskatchewan is pretty muddy albeit in spring, with the snow runoff and all. I don't see how it impacts the weather? Maybe you meant that the valley traps cold air, its certainly large enough. I disagree with you that our claim-to-fame is WEM. That irks me and people who have visited here know better. Our arts & culture have a high-profile internationally and we deserve that. And respectfully I also disagree that we're you're little cousin Daradon. History has shown Edm/Cgy have outshone the other from time-to-time, now it's Calgarys turn. Edmonton has already established itself - not world-class by any means - but enough to be internationally known. I know the metro area is a bit ridiculous, keep in mind you could take away 2/3 of the metro and lose only 10,000. St. Albert and Sherwood Park are literally touching city limits anyways. They should have been annexed years ago...
From the POV of someone who was born here, yet raised for 5 years in Calgary, both cities kick ass. Pity we're not up to Mercer's standards though. Oh well.

Lol, don't msg me to ask me what an 'expat' is then try to make your point here.
As far as Sherwood and St. Albert go, well we could talk about Airdrie and Okotoks and Chestemere, bu we don't...
The fact is your metro difference is a LOT more than 10,000 and my own post from YOU'RE CITIES WEBSITE proved that. It's 30,000.
We passed 1 mill this year, civic. Metro is 1.1 to 1.2 depending on where you draw the lines...
As far a little cousin, ya, you have been since the mid 70's... and as far as 'History has shown Edm/Cgy have outshone the other from time-to-time, now it's Calgarys turn' I haven't seen a lot of swapping in our lifetime. Have you? More importantly, with this much going on down here, will we ever?

Hey no offense intended, I really didn't know what an expat was exactly, though I knew it could have had something to do with 'ex-patriot' but then I didn't know what that meant either.
For clarification, if you shaved off 2/3 of Edmontons metro area it would decrease our population by probably around 10,000. Sorry if you took it that I was comparing it to Calgary. Now, that difference is unremarkable. Civic, metro, what have you, Edmonton made the million milestone, that is a fact. I don't know why people try to take this away from us. Well - in any case we'll know the exact number from the 2005 census. When do they do it? And how? About the little-cousin thing, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, because its all subjective. I've always looked at Calgary as our little brother because we feel more established. But like I said thats subjective and depends on what city you live in.

Either you're very bad at fractions or...
'Current projections from the City of Edmonton Planning and Development Department are that the population of the Edmonton CMA will be just under 985, 000 at the end of 2003 and the City of Edmonton population will be just under 698, 000.
from
http://www.edmonton.com/statistics/page.asp?page=84
and
EDMONTON METROPOLITAN AREA, Population statistics
* Population in 2001 (1) : 937,845
* Population in 1996 (2) : 862,597
* Edmonton Metro. Area from 1996 to 2001 population change (%) : 8.7
* Land area (square km) : 9,418.62
* [ Alberta population aprox. 3,113,600 in 2003 and
Canada's population aprox. 31,414,000 in 2003 ]
EDMONTON CITY, Population statistics
* Population in 2001 (1) : 666,104
* Population in 1996 (2) : 616,306
from

You're civic pop is about 2/3 of you metro pop. The same percentage you accuse me of taking away.
And as for feeling more established, I have no idea what that means. Maybe it's the extra 30 years of history? Who cares...
I don't usually get into these p*ssing matches, but when someone challenges me, I back it up.
Ok, I usually DO get into these p*ssing matches , but not usually about CAL-EDM...

In all fairness, Sherwood Park and St. Albert are virtually touching Edmonton. Its not a stretch at all to include those cities as part of Edmonton proper.
It's for sure colder in Edmonton than Calgary - no Chinooks up here.
Having grown up in southern Alberta and now living in Edmonton, I think that these cities have far more in common than not. If you look at the province, Calgary is more the "brain" and Edmonton is more the "heart". Together, they make this province go. Take one or the other away and you've got problems.

Daradon was right - I was never a math whiz and I HATE fractions - my best subjects were always English/Social.
Thats why I bought up the 2005 census. Between 2001-2002 we grew by almost 20,000....numbers must be higher this year. And we'll get more accurate numbers too. I love geography. So why do they do the census only every few years?

I'm not about to make a "Can't we all just get along" post...but I kinda think of it like this.
Originally from Manitoba, I can tell you both Caglary and Edmonton are great places and far superior to anything else the prairies have to offer. (Mostly aimed at Winnipeg...I think Saskatoon is pretty cool).
I think the rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton makes them both better. Their sports teams try harder, their citizens and economies are always trying to out-do each other. Overall, competition is a good thing and both cities thrive off the other.
There is no doubt that Calgary is the leader now though. So much so that I think our real competition is Vancouver...not Edmonton.
