you might want to watch 20 20 they showed videos of the other kids who have done it. Who had dolphins and whales playing beside the boat on their adventures. Looked quite beautiful to me

Well if she was my daughter and you were my son, I bet you can guess which one I would like better.

You can have whales and dolophins in the Georgia Straight, there is no need to sail round the world to see that, and if you read any thing about open ocean sailing there are 2 things that seem standard, it is incredibly boring and lonely, nothing changes from week to week.

I can't believe people are ragging on this girl for wanting to sail around the world. Going for a record or not it's pretty damn cool.
Most kids her age are watching The Hills and Jersey Shore, getting felt up by losers wearing Ed Hardy.
She's doing something that will be remembered by millions of people and is a story she'll be able to tell for the rest of her life.

Doesn't look like she'll have to tell it very often.

You may be right but we don't know for sure. Doesn't hurt to keep positive thoughts.

If you're like Robin Graham in Dove, you take a few years to do it, stop in many places, absorb many cultures, find your future wife . . . . .
If you're like Sir Francis Chichester, the first person to circumnavigate west to east around the world solo, you have a quote like this in your book like this after finding the tip of Africa emerging from a rain storm, right where it should be, long before GPS: "Once again, I marvelled at the miracle of navigation. I saw land in only four places."
Depends how you go about it.

The fact that she manually set the alarms has got to be a good sign. Here's hoping.

I'll be quite honest. Had this been my daughter and I had trained her to be a superb sailor. AND she announced that she wanted to try. I would be worried as hell but would let her go. She would know the dangers. This is no plebe sent on the ocean currents.
Seriously.....
wanting drugs, alcohol, teenage sex vs wanting to sail around the world
Which do you respect more (joking aside)? Just remember. Admiral Nelson was captain of his own ship at 13.

^Admiral Nelson didn't even make lieutenant until April 1777. He was born in 1758.

I'd rather my kid be out in the world forming relationships with other people rather than trying to set some pointless record. She should try to do difficult things but I hate people doing hard things that serve no purpose. Just because something would be difficult to accomplish, doesn't mean you should do it. Seems like vanity to me.

Its like a korean violin playing prodigy, its not even original, haven't wee seen this teen sailing thing 5 times already this year.
Just like 4X4 said, she is this weeks worlds biggest hamburger. I can't believe people are raggin on those coney Island chefs for building the worlds biggest hamburger.
There are 6.7 billion people on earth and every day people do amazing, interesting things, I bet this isn't even near the top.
If there were two headlines:
1. Girl Attempts to sail around the world
2. Man dies in vain trying to beat world record in farting out ping pong balls.
I know what story I would read first and would remember for longer.
Why the hell am I ranting about this? Screw you Russic!

That made me laugh a lot. Poor russic...you're arguing with ktrain and he gets blamed for it.

That kind of accomplishment will in fact serve a purpose. I'm sure any future endeavor whether it be in sailing or not will be positively affected by this achievement - should she finish it.

So you don't agree with Columbus discovering America or the Apollo mission to the moon? The international space station? Wall of China?

This from a CNN article:
Quote:
Abby "has all of the equipment on board to survive a crisis situation like this." "She has a dry suit, survival suit, life raft, and ditch bag with emergency supplies," the family's post said. "If she can keep warm and hang on, help will be there as soon as possible."
|
The family seems pretty confident she's ok. You'd have to think that they had her well prepared for this.
Man, I always heard though how the Indian Ocean is about the last ocean you want to be stranded in. It's like the Amazon Jungle of the seas as far as dangerous wildlife goes. Deadly sea snakes, sharks, jelly fish, etc.
Hope she makes it.

Well those are different things. I certainly don't agree with what Columbus did. Space race was a nice **** measuring contest. Wall of China was to keep out Mongols. Not to just build a wall for kicks. I do think it's important to learn about space, if only to understand our planet better.

Yeah. because they were the first to do it.
Maybe if she sailed across the world on the back of 2 whales like aquaman that would be impressive.
It is just like Everest. Who really cares about the 21312 guy who has climbed it.
