That and this time his father wasn't an influential judge in the country where the crime occurred. I would assume there will not be any friends of his late father to bail him out...if such friends even exist in Aruba.

I can't even begin to imagine the outrage one would feel towards losing a family member like this when it is so obvious this waste of skin should have been put in jail after his first murder. I hope this guy rots, even then, it won't be enough.

Apparently he confessed the the murder. She was snooping around in his laptop and found some incriminating files in relationship to Natalee's death, he snapped and broke her neck. He will serve half his life or more in a Peruvian jail or if he is lucky he confesses to Natalee's murder extradited to the Netherlands to serve 2 murder sentences. Game over, time to focus on more important unsexy stories.

Joran van der Sloot could be formally charged as early as Tuesday in the killing of Stephany Flores Ramirez, Peruvian government authorities said.

The government authorities said Van der Sloot confessed to murder late Monday. He will likely be held at one of three maximum security prisons -- Castro Castro, Piedras Gordas and Lurigancho, authorities said.
Quote:
The Peruvian justice system often issues a lighter sentence in cases where the suspect confesses. That may have influenced his alleged confession.

Van der Sloot could get up to 35 years in prison. There is no death penalty or life sentence in Peru.

I don't know, someone like him will probably like raping and beating people in jail.

I think he's going to be wishing he confessed to the first murder. The prisons in Peru are listed as some of the toughest in the world:

National Geographic: Worlds Toughest Prisons (video)

Prisoners with money had access to cell phones, illegal drugs, and meals prepared outside the prison.

Conditions were poor to extremely harsh in facilities for prisoners who lacked funds. Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate nutrition and health care were serious problems. Inmates had intermittent access to running water, bathing facilities were inadequate, kitchen facilities were unhygienic, and prisoners slept in hallways and common areas for lack of cell space. Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS reportedly remained at near-epidemic levels. The San Juan de Lurigancho men's prison held 9,874 prisoners in a facility designed for 3,204.

No, rich upper middle class psychos are small beer compared to flavella born psychos, they will rapidly extort all his money then drown him in a slop bucket (with luck).

saw this on HLN last night:

Quote:
From Nancy Grace: Michael Griffith. He is an international law attorney, criminal defense attorney.

-I have been in prisons, Nancy, in over two dozen countries, Lurigancho prison where he`s going to be sentenced, in my estimation is the worst prison I have ever been in. It`s entering the gates of hell.

-this prison is inhabited by the Sendoro Luminosa, or the Shining Path Guerillas

-The dormitory is composed of three different floors. There are approximately 35 prisoners to a room, 25 by 15. The toilet is a hole in the floor. The prisoners get a shower once a week for 15 minutes for 600 prisoners.

-In this prison, when I was visiting a client there, a prisoner was stabbed 10 feet from me. The food there is totally inedible. The only way you can survive by the food, unless you are a local, is to have food brought in

-I`m telling you that if someone wanted to get to this man -- if a family member, these people have nothing. For $50, they will be standing in line to cut this man`s throat. This man`s got a terrible -- he`s entering the gifts to hell
Those five free years he has are going to cost him dearly if that's were he ends up . . . guess there is such a thing as karma

I've been doing a little reading on Lurigancho. Apparently it's 10 000 inmates and 100 guards, and the guards have given up control to inmate "sects" or neighbourhoods.

I kinda get the impression it's like the prison in "Prison Break", except it's real.

This is probably going to turn out very bad, or very good for this kid. If he has enough money he can probably buy whatever he wants down there, and hopefully sit back and wait to be extradited. That or he gets robbed and raped every day.

Although I think he deserves 35 years in a Peruvian prison, I can't see him having to suffer the same fate as other national prisoners.

1) He is (unfortunately) a high-profile foreign national with fairly wealthy connections. Money counts in the Peruvian court system.

2) There is no way Peru allows the media to expose their inadequate prison living standards by throwing van der Sloot in a normal prison. That is a can of worms I would bet the Peruvian government would not want to crack open. Neither much of South American prisons.

3) Pressure from the Dutch or Aruban governments might make his stay in Peru a short one. Netherlands (including Aruba) and Peru are signatories to prison transfer treaties. The Netherlands may want to prosecute this guy in their own country, considering he murdered someone (Holloway) on Dutch soil.

Wow wow wow this guy has never been convicted of any crime so let's lay off with the "considering he murdered someone on Dutch soil" comments. He is innocent of killing Holloway.

There's a big difference between "not guilty" and "innocent".

He was all but found guilty, and lightning rarely strikes twice in the same place.

Sloot is guilty - judge, jury and executioner.

Your internet law degree isn't very good.

Have you guys ever heard of "innocent until proven guilty"?

You are innocent of any crime until proven guilty by a judge or jury of your peers. Legally speaking, he is currently innocent of any crime in regards to Natalee Holloway and yes, that means that OJ didn't do it, at least in the eyes of the law.

I checked the forum FAQ and there's nothing there about "innocent until proven guilty."
