Seems like all you have to do to make a successful hip-hop career these days is find a classic song from the 70's or 80's and play it in the background with a guy periodically going "yeah, yeah" or "uh-huh" over top. Instant moneymaker.
This is a very short cited accusation as arguably the largest artist in rap for the past 10 years is probably Jay-Z. The credit he gives for sampling in his work is often lyrical, not actual beats or 'the actual song'.
I'm not going to argue about the other rappers that have one hit singles and never heard from again. The artists from the 60's and 70's were doing the same thing, rock and roll was gaining momentum and the artists were just 'sampling' older country/western tunes.
Why don't you get a job? by the Offspring is basically the same song as Ob-la-Di Ob-la-Dah by the Beatles. I think the band said it was a joke. Then they released it as a single.
You stole a Beatles song and released it as a single. As a joke, not for money. Definitely not for money.

As you can see, I'm completely ridiculous.
Anyone remember "Larry & Willy" from CFOX in Vancouver?
They were on in C fox in the 90's when I lived there, They had a segment on their morning show called "Plagiarism Court".
It was brilliant! ... They would play a newer song and then play some older tune that they thought the rip-off derived from. Some of the stuff they would compare (old to new) was so obviously ripped off, especialy guitar riffs and chourses.
I grew up in part in North Vancouver and specifically seem to recall a segment on their show with someone from the Rags whining about Pure plastering him during the 94' run. It was pretty poorly done with the Ranger player whining about how he got hit while he was trying to get the puck. Heh, I think my dad has some old cassettes of their show segments they gave us years back.

I was about 12 so that's all I remember.
When i figured out you weren't talking about the bands "the rags" and "Pure", I can tell you the player they were mocking was Shane Churla of the Stars.
