Exactly what I was wondering. Which would do more to help Google (ie Android) than "kick them in the nuts" as FanIn80 suggests.
Of course, Apple has already restricted the languages you can use to compile for their platform. Would it really be that much of a stretch for them to restrict the IDE?

Well for example if you want to write a Windows C++ app, the IDE is irrelevant because the compiler is what links and compiles.. so if you can write iPhone apps on Windows that would mean the compiler and linker and all the necessary libraries are there in Windows... but I guess it would be a different compiler than a normal C++ compiler and that compiler would probably be closely tied in with VS (not a command line compiler) so I guess I'm probably wrong in thinking that one could create an Eclipse plugin.
As for C# or VB to write the iPhone apps, they definitely could restrict that. When you write a C++ app in VS you can specify what kind of app you want to write. A "real" C++ app that compiles to real machine code, or a managed C++ app that uses a different compiler to compile the C++ code into bytecode for the .NET runtime.
I would assume that the compiler that would compile down to iPhone native code wouldn't be able to parse or compile C# or VB code.

My point about kicking Google in the nuts had nothing to do with trumping Android. I'm talking about how Google will no longer have their "develop for us, and you don't have to buy a Mac" mantra.
Also, Android apps are built in Java. Java is similar to C, but it still isn't actually C. iPhone apps will still need to built from the ground up in a native language, in order to placate the EULA. It won't have any impact on Android developers, if anything, it will steal some of them back to the bigger, more lucrative and more widely-used iPhone platform.

Sorry, last time I used Visual Studio they separated C++, VB and C#.

Crazy. Since I'm learning C# and Java now, I was looking forward to delving into C++ with iPhone stuffs as my motivation.
I hear people say Xcode is one of the best IDEs on the planet, but it just flies right over my head. Mind you, I know a bit more about development now than I did the last time I tried it out.

I'm down with that. Give him his own forum to talk about all the stuff he wants to talk about (ie: every single thing he finds on the latest tech blog that is Apple related)
In fact, he should just open his own blog and then post on CP everytime he updates it!

I don't see why people complain so much about FanIn80 starting threads about Apple.
Apple is one of the big players right now. Its completely normal that there are a lot of threads about it in the Tech forum.
At least its something to talk about.

Update: Barron's reports that Chowdhry has retracted both of yesterday's claims, indicating that there will be no Microsoft announcements at WWDC. Chowdhry notes with any remaining credibility he might have, however, that his contacts "insist that both MSFT and AAPL are working on development tools - probably our timing is off".

Hmmm... Where there's smoke?
Even though I realize there's a pretty big (albeit mostly media-created) hatchet to bury, it makes pretty good business sense. Even Ballmer should be able to figure this one out.

Yeah, but half the front page is Apple... they're big, but not that big.

They're about the same size, and you don't see 10 MS threads. Another way to look at it is that Apple + MS = 2 x Apple != Entire tech world
Now obviously a lot of MS's stuff isn't really notable, but I still think FanIn80's Apple reporting is a bit excessive, especially when one of his threads is a megathread. Just my opinion though...

Two threads that are 2 years old, one that is 6 months old, another that is 2 months old, one more that is 5 days old and 2 in the last 2 days.

Deal with it.
Edit: To be even more clear... If I had created 7 threads in the last two days (or even 7 days), then that would be a bit excessive. But you guys are whining about 7 threads that span almost 2 frickin years. Here's something to think about : if people didn't want to talk about this stuff, then a 2 year old thread wouldn't still be on the first page, would it?

Again... you're not posting fatas, you're not posting off-topic, so really you can post whatever you want, and I will deal with it. I'm not losing sleep or anything. I do think you set post more Apple stuff than is really necessary, but I recognize that the only person who can change that is you. Which is why I even editted my post to point out that it was just my opinion. Yeesh.

I've created 3 Apple threads in the last week. If people can't handle 3 threads in one week, in a section of this board that probably sees 5-10 new threads a day...
I'm not the one who needs to change.

You might want to find a forum with more kindred spirits and more suited to your taste than monopolizing this one with every latest breaking news about your favorite company.
It's interesting that Apple stock is trading high but does it really deserve it's own thread obstensibly created simply to show how awesome Apple is doing? It could go in your own megathread.

Nice. 3 threads in one week, and you're telling me to gtfo and find somewhere else to post.
...and I'm the one with the problem.
