I also golf, and bat left handed... I know some guys who play hockey lefty, but golf righty.

That's what I do. I'm right handed, shoot left, golf right, and bat right.

Right handed, right shot - CanadianI remember when my dad took me down to buy my first stick. He argued that I shoot left because he was right handed, left shot in hockey, but right shot in golf. He was flabberghasted that I wanted a right handed stick. Don't know really think that was a learned behaviour, shooting left has always felt odd to me. He bought me the right handed stick, but for years he thought I was wrong and took the right handed stick just because I didn't want to admit it. It wasn't until I started buying my own sticks that he realized that I was actually a right handed shooter.

My golf pro here in the US claims that the Ping rep tells him that Ping sells more left handed clubs in Canada than they do in all of the US.

Do we learn to shoot left or right? or is it just the way our hands and arms are?

Right handed thrower, shoot right handed in hockey. But I didn't start playing ice hockey until I was 9 years old.
When this first came out wasn't it reasoned that many Canadians start playing hockey when they're 3 years old so the tendency is to hold the stick with their dominant hand because thats the hand that you use to hold the stick. Whereas once you get older and you get stronger you have the strength to hold the stick with your weaker hand and can use the other one for power.

I'm told I was born left-handed, but my parents made me right-handed when I was young (i.e. writing, eating, etc.). In high school I had a doctor do some tests and ask if I was ambidextrous (I don't think I am).
Anyways, I distinctly remember when I was little kid and my dad giving me a hockey stick to see which way felt better. I tried both and recall shooting lefty felt just a little bit more comfortable, so that's what I stuck with.
P.S. I throw right-handed, bat right-handed, and golf right-handed (and poorly).

My theory is that people who grew up in a hockey culture or household tend to shoot opposite of their handedness. But Americans, who often pick up hockey on their own, don't realize this. I had to tell my buddies who had never played before to switch to the left because they would use a right handed stick but unconsciously start using it as a left-handed stick as the game went on.
I'm a dual citizen and ambidextrous. I shoot right.

My face is a bum!

Most Americans learn golf/baseball first and I think that predisposes you to shooting with your hands in the same arrangement.
I find most Canadians that picked up hockey later shoot right if right handed.

Same with me, I left-handed but when I picked up a pencil or chopsticks at a yong age with my left hand I got hit with another chopstick. So I write and eat with my right but all other sports poorly left. (left shot, left swing in baseball and golf and kick left)

I'm a right-handed, right shot American. Maybe I should try shooting left and see if my shot is harder. In baseball/softball, I've always been a switch hitter.

- Canadian (despite present country of residence).
- Right-handed (throw, bat, golf, write, arm wrestle).
- Shoot left-handed in hockey.
