I have 3.1.2. If I do this Spirit method of jailbreaking, will I have to do anything in the future when I upgrade Itunes?

Just don't upgrade your iPod firmware.
If you want, you can upgrade to 3.1.3 and then Spirit jailbreak so you have the latest firmware.

Damn, I was about to high-five you until I clicked the link and realized it was just someone using Linux to take advantage of a security hole and browse the contents of the iPhone in a file manager.
Installing Linux actually on the phone itself would be awesome. Not Ubuntu though. OpenSUSE or Fedora for the win.

Mywi + iPad is pretty great. That 4.0 update is going to be death if there isn't a jailbreak out sometime around the launch.

4.0 beta was jailbroken at least once already.

Great to know. I'm assuming when 4.0 becomes official they'll block it again, but if the developer versions have already been cracked hopefully the wait won't be too long.

Since Apple is actively trying to prevent jailbreakers, the jailbreakers have to hold certain cards close to the vest to keep their exploits from being patched.
Pretty much every version of firmware has been broken and relatively quickly, EXCEPT 3.1.3, but that was one of those cases where they didn't want to show their cards.

So if you decide to jb your iPhone, can you continue to download OS/iTunes updates normally or do you have to crack it each time? That part I'm not clear one from an ongoing basic perspective.

You have to crack it every time you install a new version of the iPhone OS. I usually just end up cracking it for major releases. It's usually not worth it to do it for every OS update IMO.

I don't see any need to crack it period. Cydia has everything 4.0 has... it's been like that for a year.

Burninator is running a first generation iPhone. He has to jailbreak and unlock it to use after any updates.
Also, he's not getting any update for 4.0.

It says that, but it still works fine. Just cx the message, and go ahead and use it. I just had that yesterday since I used it for the first time since the last JB, and after cancelling, it was fine.

I have blackrain jailbroken iphone 3gs on 3.1.2. Can I use itunes to update to 3.1.3 and then use spirit to jailbreak?
I'm just concerned about upgrading the firmware while the phone is already jailbroken.

Yes you can. IMO just wait until 4.0 comes out. There is almost no difference between 3.1.2/3 but yes, it will work.

Despite what that article says, the gold master is the version that will be officially released. No changes between now and then. Any changes that would break the jailbreak would fall under a new release of the OS.
