Oxycontin is basically pharmaceutical heroin. If you read Slash's bio, it's what he was crushing up and snorting when he wasn't doing heroin.
I have a friend who is pretty deep into this stuff, and it's really sad to see him struggle with his addictions. Stealing from family members, friends, burning bridges, ruining relationships and ruining his life. I talked to him about it a few times, and when he "used" to deal it somewhere in the US, he said his main clients were housewives in suburban neighbourhoods. It's a commonly abused drug, and when you see pharmacy robberies or smash and grabs, that's what they're after.
I also worked with a guy that was addicted to them. He lost his job and family within 8 months of a knee surgery, after being prescribed oxy and turning into a junky. The doctor cut off his prescription, and he stopped working because he couldn't handle the withdrawal, and ended up buying them on the street.
As it's been explained to me, a lot of the opiate painkillers (Oxy, vicodin, percoset) are effective painkillers if you are in legitimate pain, as they attach themselves to nerve endings or pain receptors? Supposedly if you're not in legitimate pain they just get you high, and you end up craving more like a junky. I'm no doctor though, but I have seen first hand both sides of the coin.
I'll never touch the stuff, and that's coming from a guy that has done/seen pretty much every drug imaginable back in my days of careless youth.
