When Canada3000 went down our Visa card bailed us out. If you booked a flight, and have not received the goods Visa should reimburse you, this might best way to get your coin back for those who got hosed.

Insurance for something that you should get just seems wrong to me. The airline should provide insurance free of charge. Why do citizens have to insure themselves at every tunr for their mistakes (car accidents).
|
Yeah, it's pretty bad. Though really, what are they going to do, they can't afford to pay their people or operate their planes, so they really can't afford to say to another airline "here's $10 million, please take care of the rest of our flights". Or they could, but no one would take it because they'd never get paid
Mind you AC and Westjet are talking about doing it to pick up the customers I guess.
Anyway I agree, the company should make some kind of arrangements for the people left stranded.
But I still would always recommend travel insurance. Imagine flying out to Vancouver to meet up with a cruise ship, except your flight is delayed by a luggage truck that backed into the plane causing you to miss your cruise! I've seen it happen and it sucks for the people if they didn't have any insurance.

I flew Jetsgo a lot but I always felt it was only a matter before they went under or literally crashed. Those rickety old planes made me nervous and they don't have the best safety record.
From the Herald: "It stranded hundreds of people during a Christmas snowstorm, and Transport Canada ordered it to fly no higher than 28,000 feet after finding flight-manual deficiencies following an erratic landing in Calgary in January. "
Yikes....like flying at 28,000 ft. is going to make a difference in the event of a crash!

That's more for how long it would take to get down below 10,000 feet in the event of depressurization... Above 10,000 feet there's not enough oxygen.

More along the line of at 28,000 you have thicker air which means that in the event of a problem or a rapid loss of altitude its easier to get the plane under control due to the higher lift co-efficient at the lover altitude

Yeesh.... I heard a lot of nightmare stories about Jets go during Christmas.... simple delays put crews over their max hour limits and delayed flight for hours....they just didn't have enough resources available.....
|
It was a disaster. I flew home to Nova Scotia for Christmas with them and then back to Calgary and I'd never fly with them again. Brutal service. Everything was delayed horribly late. 2nd rate airline if you ask me.

Jetgo was restricted from flying between 29,000 and 41,000 feet because of a problem with their manuals. It didn't have sufficient procedures for the Reduced Vertical Speration Minimum (RVSM). RVSM requires that an aircraft fly at least 1000 ft above or below another aircraft.
Had nothing to do with pressurization or more dense air. Just that they weren't allowed to fly on the same "highways" as others. Purely a safety thing.
I'm sure this is what led to the demise of jetsgo, as their operating costs increased greatly because of the 28,000 ft restriction.

Hopefully nobody here had flights booked with them..... I'll bet you there's a lot of stranded Brier fans and Mounties....
|
The Bear radio in Edmonton was stating that about 200 mounties were stranded in Edmonton as a result of this collapse.
I think the RCMP should file a class action suit against JetsGo execs for stranding them in Edmonton. Just think of the mental distress damages!

Cool, good info BA!
I wonder what effect Westjet not retiring their 747-200's will have on their results.. Maybe not a good time to get out?

They are 737's, not 747's. Big difference. They really should retire the old ones though. They are probably nearing retirement anyways.

I seem to recall WJ took a rather large charge against those retired assets in Q4. I'd look into the accounting treatment of it. Seeing as they delayed it vs. cancelling the retirement, I'd suggest that the recent spike has already taken that into account.
Just looked at the WJ website. Flights to Victoria have spiked in price. Thanks guys....

Anyone know what the process is going to be to put in a bid for Jets-go equipment. Personally it would make my life easier if I had my own 737

I dunno... but I might start my own discount airline, I mean there's room in the industry now :P
I'll fly from Gander NF to Sydney NS 5 times a day, and thrice Charlottetown PE to Val d'Or PQ. Oh, and I'll offer random seats for $1, that's right $1
that's a good business plan to have with Fokker 100's right?

Actually, I'm flying from Calgary to Toronto in June, and there are still seat sales on the site.
