We've seen fizzles before from terrorist groups. There's no guarantee that a bomb is going to work every time.

Wasn't it not that long ago where there was a attack in England using a propane based bomb that fizzled badly.

Never go with your first instinct, you'll come across a lot less crazy that way.

I mean the American government is so competent that they can suppossedly bring down the trade towers, yet they can't set off a basic fuel air bomb.

Yeah, I was reading a book in the fall about the build-up to 9/11, starting in the 1970's. And in it they mention a connection between Al-Qaeda higher up Ramzi Yousef and Oklahoma City co-bomber Terry Nichols. The FBI reported seeing them both in Cebu City in the Phillipines 3 months prior to the '95 OK City bombing.

That's true, but I was thinking about Bosnian Muslims, Chechnyans who are fairly caucasion and other groups.

The whole thoughts of muslim extremists being pure arab looking is probably up for debate.

Yeah - I've seen quite a few on 24 that totally don't look like Jawas.

I'm pretty sure that the tea party and/or extreme right wingers don't need a bomb's help in blowing up their causes - They're doing a pretty good job without one

My wife just flew in to NY this morning and is staying a couple of blocks away from where the bomb was found.

If I recall, I don't think it was set up to be triggered by firecrackers.

Apparently they also found fertilizer in the van. It just happened to be the wrong kind of fertilizer and was totally harmless.

There is no way this guy has any links to any organized terrorist groups other than people in chat rooms prodding him along. Anyone with a simple mastery of a google search could make a much better bomb than this.

I'm guessing this was made by a mentally ill person or some hippy purposefully set a decoy bomb to prove a political point.

A U.S. citizen from Pakistan accused of driving a bomb-laden vehicle into Times Square was to appear in court Tuesday to face charges over the failed attempt to set off a massive fireball and kill Americans, federal authorities say.

Faisal Shahzad was taken into custody late Monday by FBI agents and New York Police Department detectives while trying to leave the country, according to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and other officials.

Shahzad was identified by customs agents at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was stopped before boarding a flight to Dubai, Holder said early Tuesday in Washington.

....

FBI agents searched the home at a known address for Shahzad in Bridgeport, Conn., early Tuesday, said agent Kimberly Mertz, who wouldn't answer questions about the search.

Sounds like he just returned from a 5 month stay in pakistan....likely was at least representing one of the whacko Islamic groups.

Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Shahzad has a Karachi identification card, a sign of Pakistani residency, and that his family is from volatile northwestern Pakistan, where government forces have been fighting Taliban militants, who have strongholds in the area.

A bit of a Follow up on msn today. Apparently Shahzad did a trial run on April 28th to stake out locations to bomb.

Yes I will admit I was wrong on this one. He clearly has ties to some group internatinoal terrorist group. The sofistication and size of this group.... well maybe this guy was just a really really really bad student. He was playing hookey during the bomb makign class.

Aren't the dumb ones supposed to get strapped up with dynamite vest and not be in charge of making the bombs? This has got to be upper management's fault.
