I hear that. My ex's little cousin (14 years old or so) was looking through my iPod and asked me who Nirvana was. Now that made me feel old.

Enter the music snob...

Big Shiny Tunes #2 was the beginning of the end of a great era of music. YES, there are some great tracks on that compilation. Some amazing 90s tracks. But that is the problem. Some of the songs on that compilation were taken from mediocre albums, but BST 2 made the artists into one hit wonders. Suddenly, having one hit song made you a successful artist, and a viable avenue for the record companies to make money.

There is no reason anyone should know about Bran Van 3000, except for BST2. And Blur, Song 2? They had so much more to offer for North American audiences, but all we remember is "Woo hoo!". Sugar Ray, "Fly": TERRIBLE song, but it caught the ear of the casual listener, enough so that it became a hit, and MUCH included it in their compilation.

Imagine if the 90s continues in the direction that BST#1 started. Some great radio hits, yes: One More Astronaut, Sweet Dreams, Just a Girl, Just. But then some OTHER songs, songs that you DIDN'T hear once an hour on the radio: Angry Johnny, Tahitian Moon, hell, even Ophelia by Moist (i.e. NOT their radio hit at the time, but an example of what the band had to offer). Big Shiny Tunes 1 really was a showcase of what was happening NOW, and what will be happening TOMORROW.

Big Shiny Tunes #2 was just a safe bet on what the kids hear on the radio now, and therefore will be a safe bet for kids to spend their money on if all the songs are in one place.

The 90s era of music might have been at a peak when BST2 was released, but all that means is BST2 signified the ensuing artistic downfall.

Yeah, but you're the guy who dislikes Guns 'N' Roses, so I'm not sure we can respect your music opinion.

Much Music itself is a pretty good throwback....do kids even watch music videos today?

I dunno, that just sounds like a kid who doesnt know his music at all. I didn't grow up with the Beatles or the Hollies, but still knew who they were by that age. I suspect most people were the same.

I actually remember when Much Music actually showed nothing but videos all day. When they still had Erica Ehm, and it was still called MuchMusic, not just "Much". Of course, back then they were still competing with Samantha Taylor and "Video Hits".

I can't remember the last time I watched Much Music. It seems like now it's all reality TV and crap.

Are you actually saying there has not been a good alternative album produced since BST2 was released? How was it not viable to be a one hit wonder before this? Do the 1980's ring a bell?

"BST2 signified the ensuing artistic downfall." No it didn't.

The funniest thing was when Ed the Sock basically called the downfall of Muchmusic right on the air, when they started showing a couple of different shows that weren't about the music.

I can't remember exactly what he said because it was years ago, but he basically ranted about how they were getting away from music, and were going to start showing crappy shows about artist's cars, and reality shows, and how they were lowering themselves to the lowest common denominator to make an extra buck, and that this was just the beggining

At the time I thought he was just being Ed the Sock, aka just saying controversial stuff to get people to listen, but sure enough they kept on adding more and more non-music shows, and it turns out we was actually letting people know what was really going on.

I believe the correct choice is:

  1. The Notorious B.I.G. - "Hypnotize"
  2. LL Cool J - "Doin' It"
  3. Wyclef Jean - "We Tryin' To Stay Alive"
  4. Robyn - "Do You Know (What It Takes)"
  5. Savage Garden - "I Want You"
  6. Track unavailble
  7. Puff Daddy featuring Faith Evans & 112 - "I'll Be Missing You"
  8. Unique II - "Break My Stride"
  9. Jet Fuel - "Hang On! Here We Go"
  10. U2 - "Discothèque"
  11. Diana King - "I Say A Little Prayer"
  12. The Cardigans - "Love Fool"
  13. Backstreet Boys - "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)"
  14. OMC - "How Bizarre"
  15. Love Inc. - "Broken Bones"
  16. DJ Company - "Rhythm Of Love"
  17. KRS-One - "Step Into A World"

I agree with the choice of both BST#2 and MuchDance '97 as the height of Much compilations. BST#3 was a good one as well, but doesn't have the "don't skip any track" quality of #2.

I'm a little curious, why do you frequently state in threads that you hate everything beyond the 80's? I'm a child of the 80's (like you I'm assuming) but the decade just doesn't hold the same allure for me. It just seems like you prefer 80's everything, and I just can't fathom why.

Weren't GNR the only decent band in the 80's?

BST 2 here as well. As someone who was poor in Jr. High this was one of the few CDs that I had. It got overplayed so much that it gave me headaches

I purchased 1 to 6 as well. Never bothered with 7 and beyond.
