Really it's your country who cares, I could care less if it was pulled down and burned. At the same time I don't want to see another countries flag flying higher than the US flag in my country, or another States flag higher than the Texas flag.

One thing I've noticed about Americans is that you guys are very fanatical about your flags down there.
After Sept 11th, they put up an American flag at the community centre, and it had the smallest little rip in the corner. Like you literally had to walk up to the flag and inspect it it to even notice it, and our neighbours (originally from the States), called it a disgrace, and asked the guys at the community centre to either replace it, or just not have one up at all.
On one hand, we understood that even though the rip was so small that 99% of people wouldn't even notice it unless they were closely inspecting the flag, that it still matters very much to Americans that a flag is 100% clean and free of blemishes, on the other hand, we were kind of like "FFS, we're just trying to support you guys when your country needs it, and we had only good intentions by putting it up there".

It is only a problem when it is another country. When it is your fellow countryman the only people who seem to care about an US in tatters is sadly current and ex-armed forces. I have seen flags that in no way shape or form should be flown anymore. God forbid you do the right thing and burn the flag you would probably be painted a terrorist in this day.

When I saw the title I thought "Man, how mean of some Canadians to take an American flag and deface/burn/wipe their bums with it." But seriously? They are upset that they took down a flag and raised a Canadian one? Wow...
Those guys took it way to far. They deserve a time out and no cookies after nap time.
If they are so upset about this I wonder how they would feel if another country came in and laid waste to their cities, stealing their number 1 export (Hip hop music I think?) and the leave with everything in shambles...

When the term 'desecrate' is trotted out, I was expecting a crime moderately more heinous than 'removed and replaced.'
By any and all standards this is unbelievably tame, and absolutely nothing worth getting their panties in a twist about.
I think Americans have become the single most easily offended society in the world.

I've only heard about this here on CP (and I guess CNN) but I think this is getting blown out of proportion a little.
First the flag was torn and buried. I agree Desecrated led me to believe someone went #2 all over and left it on the doorstep.
second, all this story is about is someone getting arrested for doing a crime. It's trespassing and vandalism. Someone called the cops to report a crime and the cops had to act on it.
The "criminals" will only get a little fine and/or a little community service if that.
If I had a sign painted up on my property and someone vandalized it, I would have probably called the cops too.
If this was the other way around, and Americans living in Canada, ripped and buried then switched someones flag I wonder what the reaction here would be.

Honestly, I suspect and hope that our reaction would be "good thing it's laundry day anyway."
Toss it in with the light colours on warm/cold and then hang it back up--or if it's ripped beyond repair, buy a new one and have a nice day.
Seriously, why get all exercised about a tchotchke that you can buy for 19.99 at Wal-Mart?

Seems to me the intention wasn't anything more than drunken teasing. Not a big deal. Although, I've come to think of patriotism as ridiculous, so maybe I'm biased.

I think some people are getting confused. Desecrated means means damaged. Defecated means crapped on.

We'd shat a brick and blow it all out of proportion.
Really, a couple of Canadian idiots in La Quinta don't represent me or my country and the vice versa, if it happened, would also be true.
Throw 'em in the klink. They'll have it coming. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

The problem is, it wasn't on someone's private property. Unless I misunderstood, it was a makeshift memorial on public land.

They are apparently remorseful and probably quite embarrassed. The people in the area should settle for a public apology, a shiny new flag courtesy of the two fools, and a donation to a local charity (or to future upkeep of the memorial, etc.).
I know that Americans love their flags, but I'd like to think that even most Americans would think that throwing these guys in the clink, using up taxpayers' resources, and taking up a space of "real" criminals is probably a bit excessive.
Lesson learned. Let the justice system deal with more pressing issues.

dude, they were charged with a misdemeanor; what you listed is all they will get. I don't know where you got to thinking they would receive jail time.
The worst will probably be some length (3-6 months) of probation, which imo means nothing as long as your not a druggie.

Second last line says that they "could" spend up to one year in jail. I doubt that it will happen, given the circumstances.
