Frenchman St. is where you want to go for live music. There are a ton of clubs in a 2-3 block area. Since you'll be down for Jazzfest, keep an eye out for artists playing shows after hours at these Frenchman St. spots:

The Apple Barrel
Snug Harbor
Blue Nile
DBA
The Spotted Cat

Many folks I know down there make sure that they take visitors to Cochon, best authentic Cajun food in town.

Another local hangout is Lucy's. It's Drew Brees' tavern of choice and just an all around cool spot.

Mid-City Rock n Bowl is a lot of fun, bowling while being entertained by a live band!

The Rebirth Brass Band usually plays Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf...

Check out the antique shops on Magazine St., and take a cemetery tour if you're into that as well.

Have fun on Bourbon Street, but make sure you go to some of the great "out of the way" places as well, it will make your trip much more enjoyable.

Oh, and the food is good pretty much anywhere, just stay away from the chains. Make sure to enjoy one of the drive-thru daiquiri shops as well!

Eat at Krystals on bourbon street. But before that go and get a pistol, load it to the gills and wait.

Hook up with Peter Fonda, grab a couple madame's, drop a hit or two of acid and hang out in a cemetery all afternoon.

Do a ghost tour in the French Quarters. Some great stories and you learn some history of the city.

Hey guys, just wanted to thank everyone for the great advice. New Orleans was an amazing place, it's so refreshing to go to a city that still has some unique qualities that you can't find anywhere else. The people are really friendly and chatty (almost too much), but have clearly gone through a lot.

Jazzfest was amazing....I highly recommend building a trip down south around this. I spent most of my time in the Blues tent, but the Zydeco music was also really great....so much better to hear this live, surrounded by a lot of great food options. Unfortunately it was raining for a good chunk of the day, but since the weather was so warm and humid, it really didn't matter.

I went on a swamp tour which I highly recommend to anyone (do the small 6 man boat though, not the giant 20-man ones). We saw a lot of gators, snakes, turtles, and even some wild boars and nutria. Amazing to get so close.

Here's a little photo of us feeding a gator with a marshmallow. Apparently they'll eat anything, and marshmallows tend to look like dead floating fish.

Speaking of which, I've never eaten so many new animals. I can now check Gator, Turtle, Crawfish, Corbia off my list....

Bourbon Street wasn't really my bag, but that's alright, the french quarter was still great.

Sit on the steps of the cathedral in Jackson Square towards sunset and listen to some impromptu blues or just people watch.

Cafe du Monde and the beignets.

Take the St. Charles trolley, I think, out to Audubon Park where there is a zoo but some nice walking and sitting.

Alligators are great!!
