This is nothing like it being docked to the ISS or being in orbit - this is an unmistakable fireball in the sky.

If you do get up to watch it, make sure you stand around afterward to hear to sonic boom.

Do you think people in Edmonton will be able to see this?

Someone commented of the story: "The only thing flying over my head at that time is my neighbour's beer bottles when he's 'had enough'!"

So in other words, really really late tonight right? I stay up until 6 anyway.

If the weather holds, then just head outside @ 5:10ish and look west - it's only going to take a couple minutes to cover the skyline.

I did find one video on youtube but I'm sceptical how visible it will be...especially at 5 am, the sky will be getting light.

At what elevation do you think it will be above Calgary? 2-300,000 ft ?

It's at 83,000 ft 6 miles out and Calgary is 3000 miles out.

I don't know?

If it's anything like 96, then there will no doubt what it is when is crosses the sky.

Just don't expect this:

I may be able to see it as it's flying over N. Vancouver Island and if it takes the second stab at Kennedy it will pass over Vancouver and Helena Montana.

Sample vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts_pS0BM95o

Note: there is no soundtrack in real life.

Like all things astronomical, although neat, its gonna look fairly tiny and less impressive in real life, especially since it will be so much more light here in Calgary. I highly, highly doubt anyone is gonna hear a sonic boom either - its got to be far too high up over Calgary for that.

Edit: here is a vid from Colorado, and if this is closer to what we will see, colour me unimpressed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0mP4k--H5o

I drove out west past Spruce Meadows in 96 and it was extremely impressive - and yes, I did hear the sonic boom.

I didn't rattle my ear drums or break windows, but it was a definite boom in the morning air.

Cool...I'd really like to see this. The weather here looks like it'll be good for viewing, but in Florida looks to be kind of iffy. Here's the forecast for Kennedy Space Center. Anyone in the know give odds of it happening based on this forecast?

It'll pass Calgary at 5:13 so that would be 4:13 here on the coast. Anybody guess what time it will pass Vancouver Island?

I have not used this technique but it sounds like a pretty good idea. http://www.astropix.com/HTML/I_ASTRO...OD/TRIPOD2.HTM

I was going to recommend a long exposure and happened across this site when I went to confirm settings.

Alarm set, tripod ready, disappointment looming. I'm going to give it a try though.
