I like to give pets very common human sounds names like Mike, Dave or Steve. I find this affords a number of advantages.
1) When you inevitably meet someone with that name you can say "Hey! That's my cat's name!"
2) When you stand out on the deck yelling "Here Steve! Here boy!" your neighbours will wonder why you talk you your children like animals.
3) When the neighbours ask you why you talk to your children like animals you can respond "Well Steve's just a [censored synonym for cat starting with p ending in y]"
4) If you ever have to take a polygraph test and the examiner asks you what you were doing on Tuesday night you can say "I was just hanging out with Steve and Mike" and you wouldn't be lying.
5) No need to buy expensive collars, you can just buy novelty license plates for them.
6) If your home is ever on fire you can just say "My god! Steve is still trapped in there" and the odds of the firefighters going back in to save your cat increases dramatically
7) You can send people letters and then when you sign your name you put "and Steve and Mike!" behind yours in brackets.
8) It's easy to find stockings for them at Christmas time with their names already sewn on so they know whose is whose.
9) When someone asks you in public how Steve is doing you can reply that he's such a handful that you have to leave him locked in his cage most of the day.
10) If you don't want new people to come over to your place all you have to do is say "naw, steve and mike crapped all over the carpet again. It's a real mess"
