The rainbow effect is the color wheel that you see. You won't see it unless you move your eyeballs right to left very quick all the time, I sure don't watch tv that way. Good choice on TV. DLP is the way to go for quality, color, brightness long term life. It also uses a user replaceable lamp, so you don't have to worry about paying to get it service. There are no pixels to burnout like LCD. There is no burn in, like LCD and plasma. And it can be fixed, unlike plasma. I don't understand why anyone would buy a plasma or lcd (unless space is the biggest problem).
I have a 46" Samsung DLP and love it.

Once again, LCD's DO NOT burn in.

LCD's do burn in, at least with my experiences with PC monitors.

I work on a laptop, and have for well over a year. Why don't I have the start button burned into my monitor?
Infact show me any laptop or LCD computer monitor made in the last couple years and i'll eat my words. [/b][/quote]
I'm using a laptop. I had burn in. Not a huge ammount of it, in fact VERY faint. But my warrenty was running out and I sent it to HP to be replaced for free. I was also using a pretty bright XP skin that seemed to be the direct cause of it.
Considering the ammount i've used it over that year, the faint burn in wasn't bad at all.

Maybe HP sources cheap panels, because mine is on for probably 10 hours a day and I've had no problems.

I've got mine on nearly 17 hours a day so, do the math Enjoy sending your notebook in about 5 more months. j/k

Most warranties exclude the bulb as a wear and tear item.
I still got a warranty anyways though.

99% of LCD burn-in cases are usually just image persistence. Often caused by having a high contrast area (bright task bar and dark background for example). It's not actual damage, just a deading of the response of some pixels.
Most of the time you can get rid of it by either leaving the LCD off for a looong time, or setting a screen saver to be full white and have that display all the time while you aren't using the screen for a few weeks.
Most of the time that gets rid of it. Of course if it's under warranty getting the panel replaced will work too
Not sure what causes it though, I've seen LCD's with the same background or windows up for years and not a problem.

Think of what you are paying for with an extended warranty:
You pay the price of the average repair amount for the device you are buying
+ a cut for the salesman that sold it
+ enough money to pay for the people that work at the warranty place to process your warranty
+ profit for said company
Me, I figure if I never buy a warranty, and my products break an average number of times, I come out way ahead.

Only buy manufacturers warrenty direct from them... NEVER buy a store based warranty. They usually really suck.

Your problem my friend, is that you bought an HP, the biggest piece of shinguard in the technology world. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 and I leave it on 21 hours per day with no screensaver and after 2.5 years it has zero burn in and and screen is as good as new.

Some people actually have real tasks to busy their laptops with such as going to school, work, and posting on CP while at school and at work. So no, I'm not a gamer nor do I find Warcraft entertaining. I have however been playing NHL 2005 at work for the past 5 months in dynasty mode and have went thru 46 seasons in total, awesome graphics and the 30 Stanley Cups I've won look very real, no complaints here.

... real work to do.... not gamer....NHL 2005.... 46 seasons.... does not compute ... buffer overload
I wouldn't go near a Dell, even for work related tasks only. I have been forced to use Dells at work for six years, and if my office window wasn't safety glass they would have to endure a different kind of load test.
EDIT: Thread confusion.

You'd be wanting to throw an HP notebook out the window too if you had one. I have a Dell 5160 that I use for both at home and work and I have no complaints so far.
And whoever said LCD's get burn-in doesn't know what they're talking about. I have some junky viewsonic attached to one of my servers here at work, and all it does is shows that the server is locked down so the image never changes. I rarely turn off that monitor and it still has no image burn-in.

Ahem. Thread Jesus here.
Just sold my house, and now I'm going to spend a ######ed amount of money on a TV (36" Plasma, LCD or DLP). I spend most of my time watching hockey/sports/movies, so I figured the 36" LG DLP was the way to go.....I looked at one on the weekend that was $3600. Any thoughts? Is that too much? Anyone know of any deals out there?
Bertuzzied: How do you like yours?
Everyone else: How much should this cost me? I'm thinking of spending $3500 to $4000, so should I be getting something bigger? Smaller? Less ridiculous?

For that amount of money you should be able to get something quite a bit bigger than 36".

Holy crap from the netherworld Batman. I can't believe it's been 8 months since I moved.
8 months in I have no regrets at all with buying the LG LCD projection. Especially since I switched to Bell from Shaw. In the meantime I also got the Daytek plasma from Costco since it was so cheap, with a coupon it came to $1500 but thats not HD. Still the picture on it is pretty good for movies.
I would stay away from the DLP though. That spinning wheel isn't that reliable. One of my friends who bought one 3 months ago had to get it serviced already. Plus i think that DLP technology is being phased out.
The tv of choice for me now would be a Hitachi LCD projection. They are pretty cheap now too and futureshop sometimes have them on sale. Otherwise the Sony Grand Wega isn't that bad either.
Whatever you do make sure you get a TV at least 40 inches though!
