Griffen and Bonner put on one hell of a show. That was one of the best UFC fights I have ever seen. Nice move by the UFC to give them both contracts.

For fans of the show sherdog.com has a write up of all the undercard match ups here.
http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles.asp?n_id=2646
Sam Hoger vs Bobby Southworth
Chris Lebman vs Jason Thacker
Josh Koshcheck vs Chris Sanford
Nate Quarry vs Loden Sincade
Mick Swick vs Alex Schoenauer

I hope Bonner's and Griffen's first UFC fight is a re-match, what a war.

The UFC now is alot more exciting then it ever was. Tank Abbott was exciting, but does anyone remember those long 20 minute snore fests that Royce Gracie was involved in? Nothing but ground work.
What difference in opinion. Tank Abbot was a complete joke, one of the things that really help give MMA and bad name early on. I for one look to the grappling side of fighting and really love to see fighters that honour and have respect for their teachers, ones that are not “pit fighting” type of fighters. The Royce Gracie and Dan Severn was one of the all time great fights for me. I for one can’t wait for a match to be taken to the ground, the stand up part of it I don’t care for really. It’s also my belief that because the UFC was catering to the American public and trying to get that undefeated KO puncher and to appeal the KO beer drinking public its what really caved in the UFC a few years ago. It’s not until now that after new ownership is that it getting a little bit better (I stress little). As written above Pride Fighting Championship is where it’s at, the best MMA fighters in the world. Look for this month as they start their Total Elimination tournament again, something that once the UFC can return to it’s past heights and attract the best fighters they’ll be able to host tournament style fighting again (Pride’s champions even enter it as it’s an honour to win the tournament).

I’m really scared that the Griffen and Bonner fight being televised last night “could” hurt the sport. I really hope it doesn’t and if anything I really hope that the sportsmanship showed between these two fighters is what was seen more then anything. The last thing the UFC really needed was another back eye in the non-MMA critics and I hope that Griffen being cut opened like he was doesn’t send the wrong message to those that control whether or not to allow it on cable TV.

A few years ago, I went to an event at the Max Bell (can't remember the name) where th majority of the crowd was yelling out to the ref to get the fighters off the ground. From a groundwork point of view it was great for the level of competitors but I imagine just because people see 'fighting' involved they expect a boxing match with only knockouts.

Anyways, I am not sure how many people would be interested in this, but in Edmonton they will be holding King of the Cage next weekend. (see ticketmaster) ticket prices aren't too bad and the quality of fighters are slightly below that of UFC (IMO) but it should be a great show nonetheless. Oh yeah, this is the first time that it has taken place in Canada so this is a bit of history in the making.

As for the snore fests with Royce Gracie, at the time the guy (and his family) were unstoppable because nobody knew how to fight them. Now it is almost mandatory that any competitor is a bit knowledgable in ground work and locks. I remember back in the day where Karate guys would be joining UFC and would just get pummeled. ....If only Mr. Miyagi was there to coach...one can only dream....
