I thank posts that I agree with.

That way I don't have to bother typing my thoughts into a coherent post

Thanks are contagious like a common spring flu and are grossly overated. I actually do the complete opposite of the op and skip over posts with 'thanks'. More often then not they are sarcastic like a poster in this thread said or demeaning to another posters opinion and I just can't be bothered. I'm more interested in hearing an opinion rather then hearing sarcastic comments. That's just me though.

Some people have well thought out comments, others have witty replies. Both get thanked equally, IMO.

Totally normal. Although I didn't say that I was a d/d free whore though. You may want to see your doctor if that burning feeling persists. Sorry about that.

I want a usertitle. I hope when I accumulate 500 thanks I can get one.

I would change it to "Backlund's biggest fan!" But mods won't do it. /le sigh

Sarcastic and demeaning comments on the internet?? Surely not!

Yes, I did that on purpose.

I wish they would implement the "Craig Button", as it would allow people to let the poster know that their post wasn't the worst ever, but could still use some work. It might get carried away, though, so I doubt it will happen.

I remember campaigning to institute the 'Bitch Slap' button, where more senior posters would be allowed to ban a particular poster they didnt agree with for an hour or two.

Strangely enough, it was never picked up....

Other than that though, you can read enough threads in this place to fogure out which posters are good and what attitudes you can expect in any particular thread.

Take this thread for instance, flip freaking out about the thanks function and flameswin calling him on obsessing about the trivial. Also, snide comments in regards to moon.

All entirely predictable, no 'thanks' needed.

Actually I agree with Flip on this one. Strong opinions (for better or worse) get far more thanks than thoughtful, non-confrontational posts.

I suppose that is why media so often seems confrontational - an unbiased, middle-of-the-road report is ignored, a report filled with rhetoric and bombast elicits a strong response from both for and against positions..

I find "Thanks" are an odd creature. I've made posts that I thought were witty, funny and intelligent that got little to no thanks when I thought I would receive them. Then I've made posts that were off the cuff, off hand, smarmy posts that had numerous thanks.

I've found there are two types of posts I made that get thanked.

1 - short, sarcastic, smarmy, witty & funny posts

2 - taking a position outside the norm that is being argued with a well laid out, articulated counter-point (usually in a heat of the moment venting thread)

That said I like the thanks. When you look at your statistics and go through your thanked posts, it's like a greatest hits record of all your own best work!
