Have you not been reading. The GG has no power to do that, or much of anything really.

The GG does have immense power in some instances though. Imagine if she had refused Harper's request to prorogue Parliament when Dion, Layton and Duceppe attempted to usurp the democractic will of the people?
That said, good riddance.

Um I would vote for you. Finally, somebody that understands what Canadians want!
Agreed. The current one is the worst we ever had.

I thought Clarkson was worse myself - I always got the feeling it was just a big ego trip for her myself (including when she thought there should be a woman's equivalent to the Stanley Cup, which of course should be called the Clarkson Cup). But neither have really been much good - I'm not sure why anyone thought journalists would make good governor generals.

In that specific case, she had no power. If she had refused the request to prorogue, that would have been an abuse of power and her position would have been eliminated. Canadians are not going to vote a party out of office because of the GG position so long as the position remains a figurehead. If a Governor General ever actually tried to influence our politics on behalf of England, I think the position would be eliminated very quickly. Canadians, in general, feel no connection to the monarchy and would be happy to get rid of the pomp and ceremony that goes with it. But its a loser of an election issue since it is dwarfed by much bigger issues.
BTW - I had no problems with Jean. I don't what specifically pissed off the people in this thread. Clarkson on the other hand spent all her time on lavish holidays and treated her term as one giant party.

Rumour has it that Harper has informally offered it to Rick Hansen.

The GG does as instructed by the sitting Prime Minister with support of the house. There is a strong argument that could be made that in the case above Harper did NOT have support of the house. IIRC the party leaders came out in the media and said that they were going to vote against the Prime Minister in a vote of no confidence. Harper asked to prorogue Parliament to avoid said vote.
In the end I believe that the GG made the correct choice in listening to Harper and proroguing government (not that I necessarily agree with the decision to prorogue) because if of the sheer clusterfata that could have happened if Dion then formed government at that time.

Recent Governor Generals of Canada as according to the acclaimed TV series Glee:
So far we've had:
Asian
Aretha
and maybe soon,
Wheels
Who else would be next? Who will join the Governor General Glee Club?
Santana? The other Asian? Gay Kid? Shaft?

Bah
Its probably going to go to Ben Mulroney or Justin Trudeau by means of some sort of "Who wants to be the next Governor General Contest". As usual it will be broadcasted by the CBC and sponsored by Kraft Dinner and Tim Hortons.

The "Man in Motion", although they have denied it. Rumours are that he may have actually declined the offer.
Not that he doesn't do a lot of good, but hasn't he also had a few run-ins with the law in the past? I seem to recall a DUI and maybe some other things... not good for someone to be the GG imo.

Are you absolutely sure you're not thinking of Steve Fonyo? I'd like to see a link to this DUI stuff.... I don't remember that...

Rick Hansen did get a DUI, it was all over the news a few years back. I don't think that disqualifies him from the position though, he'd be a good choice.

I read a piece in the Globe today stating that Rick Hansen is likely out as he cannot speak French. Also referenced that he has not been asked, either, and that I don't think he is interested?
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...litics+News%29
But while Ottawa is beginning to buzz with speculation about successors, Tory insiders acknowledge that Ms. Jean’s successor must be bilingual, especially since the job carries with it the honorary post of colonel of the Quebec-based Royal 22nd Regiment, popularly known as the Vandoos.
...
“Look for the PM to choose someone who speaks to things he admires in Canada – those hard-working main-street values – and can do it in both of Canada's official languages. There are lots of capable Canadians that fit that profile.”
But the bilingualism requirement would seem to rule out Rick Hansen, the Vancouver-based wheelchair athlete and advocate for the disabled. Mr. Hansen was mentioned as a candidate five years ago, when Ms. Jean was appointed by former prime minister Paul Martin. A spokeswoman for Mr. Hansen said Sunday that he has not been approached for the job, and is not fluent in French.
Wayne Gretzky, named by CTV as a favourite among the Conservative caucus, would also be ineligible.
.....
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/a...or-general-job
A senior source says Rick Hansen, the wheelchair athlete who put spinal cord injuries on the public agenda during his Man in Motion world tour 25 years ago, has already been approached about taking the job but is not interested.
"He's been approached, but he's got long-range aims and objectives," said one source.
