Personally, I walk on 8th pretty much everyday as I work there, often well after the office crowd goes home. I have not witnessed any random beatings or violent acts. All that said there is an alarming increase of reported 'random' beatings.

I try not to be downtown after 6pm if I can help it. It's a creepy atmosphere.

With most major metropolitan cities the downtown is alive up until 1 or 2am, but Calgary's is dead after 6pm. It's not safe because of that... The more people around the safer it is (plus increased police presence).

I disagree. I find most of the Centre City safe at all hours of the day, minus perhaps the east village, and even that is changing.

That's not even remotely true. It depends entirely on what you classify as "downtown." The Central Business District (CBD) of almost any city (yes, even New York, London, Chicago, Toronto, etc.) is fairly quiet after business hours. It is always the areas surrounding the CBD that are lively after business hours because they contain entertainment districts, large sporting facilities, bars, restaurants, and other amenities that are open late. For Calgary this means the Beltline (especially 17th Ave.), Kensington, 4th Street Mission, etc.

Not even former oiler coaches want to live in Edmonton.

That was a joke, by the way.

Kent Brockman: Homer, how do you respond to the allegations that your men are committing more crimes than they are preventing?
Homer: Oh, Ken. I'd be lying if I said my men weren't committing crimes.
Kent: Touche... (and later in the interview) while petty crimes have come down 10%, heavy sack beatings have gone up a whopping 900%.
Homer: Oh, Kent. Anyone can come up with statistics. 14% of all people know that.

jeez, I don't think downtown Calgary is dangerous at all. Certainly not compared to many, many other cities.

I don't think it matters what city you are in, they all have incidents that are mind blowingly awful. Calgary is no different then, say, a small city like Prince George. They have gangs and killings, it is not unique to our city of Calgary

Total crap.

I walked from MSG to my hotel in the middle of Manhattan after a Rangers game and the streets were dead. The only things that attracts people to a downtown area after working hours are restaurants, bars, and theatres. It doesn't matter if there are 8 million people or 1 million, people don't randomly walk around downtown at 11 pm just for fun.

Being 9:00 pm on St. Patty's day, it was probably just a group of drunk ######s that were out of beer money. I wish him a speedy recovery.

You have to be joking. Try living in Winnipeg, and you will get an idea of what a "dead" downtown is like. I lived in Calgary for 2 years, and was shocked at how vibrant, and busy Calgary's Downtown core was.

You must have missed the "Major metropolitan" part of his comment.
