But it will LOOK better, so it will run better because everyone who's put speed holes in their car knows looks are worth at least 10hp or 10MHz in this case.

I've never met a DBA that was a database fanboy, but if they were, they're worthless.

Oh I don't know, I've seen some pretty epic DBAs that were definite fanboys, and there were definite wars over.. well usually over anything vs. MSSQL. Think mac vs. PC commercials where anything can be mac but only MSSQL can be PC.
EDIT: And for the record I enjoyed working with MSSQL.

Oracle for the longest time had superior transactional support (it's so very easy to deadlock SQL Server), but these days the differences are mostly implementation and not really apparent from a developer POV.
Whenever I deal with with an Oracle doofus, I just ask them to explain VARCHAR2. That usually gets them blushing.

Seriously? There are some pretty heated debates, and some fairly different mechanisms in some areas (how Null is handled being a fairly common example).

Of course my exposure to the different DB environments is minimal at best, but for what it's worth MySQL is the one I like the best so far.
Just yesterday in class, we were running some basic select queries in Oracle, and I started jumping ahead a bit into some other areas... Which lasted until I got to the part where I wanted to incorporate other tables in my queries. That's when I discovered how much I'd been taking for granted the "show tables" command from MySQL.

I think the other smart Mel guy nailed it, working for an outfit where you can do both is a great way to build up your chops on both sides. That's what I've done, and I'm quite happy with how much I've been allowed to learn over the years.
Having very solid database understanding is fundamental to becoming a great application developer. With that, you can work WITH the database developer to come up with really effective solutions. Without it, you frequently get application developers building in too much functionality that should be handled within the database platform.
Within what is usually referred to as a DBA role are actually two roles: true DBA work, and database developer. It sound to me like you're most interested in database development. Designing databases (some think this is DBA work, I don't), creating data loading packages, reporting services, etc. Basically, the bits that your applications might interact with.
One thing to consider is that DBA's (and particularly Oracle DBAs) usually get paid scads of cash.
