Good point. I may be wrong about that. At my previous job, I had to transport oxygen tanks on occasion and was told by the supply company that it was illegal to have them inside a car. Maybe they were just worried about their own liability.
Either way, if one of them is punctured, it can become a dangerous projectile and/or a fire hazard.

Whether it's for breathing purposes or not, I believe that it's illegal to drive with an oxygen tank in your car (at least some places).

There sure is a lot of people in this thread who don't know what they are talking about. A lot of the new oxygen systems don't have tanks but are a portable battery operated machine. They're advertised on TV all the time.

Why are you room mates with someone who uses an oxygen tank? You live with your grandma?

Not to get off topic, but by that logic, does that mean old people with oxygen tanks should be banned from riding in cars in general in case of an accident?
Edit: Whoops, I just noticed this was already asked by another poster.

You still need tanks for when you are outside of your house. My uncle has one of those machines, and a 150ft long hose so that he can walk all around his house. He takes the machine along if he's going to stay somewhere overnight, but he has tanks for when he's driving or riding somewhere, or out for a short trip.

A few years back at Governors Pub there used to be a Guy who would pack around an O2 tank everyday.
As well he would smoke like a chimney.(Before the smoking bylaw...)
Always made me a bit nervous that he was having an open flame around O2 inside a bar....
Just another excuse to have another beer I guess.

IIRC, most instances of spontaneous human combustion involve oxygen and smoking.

Your uncle hasn't got the latest. They have portable machines now. I've seen them on late night TV with one strapped on a ladies back like a small back pack.

The latest probably also means mucho $$$. I know it costs quite a bit for my uncle to even rent the house bound machine he's got. ( I think they are renting, makes the most sense I think). I f you aren't out all day every day, still probably cheaper to go with bottles when you are out.

No question...anyone requiring oxygen to survive should not be allowed to drive. Makes all the sense in the world.
As for banning cylinders in motor vehicles...how in the hell are they supposed to get them in the first place? Any way you slice it, those cylinders have to be driven by someone at some point just to get to their destination.

I've read this 5 times and I still can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.
If you are, driving is not a right, it's a privilege. There are certain factors that you may have no control over that prevent you from safely operating a motor vehicle. It sucks, but them's the brakes (har har). You're blind? Narcoleptic? Sorry pal, but you're not driving. Old people whine about how their rights would be infringed by mandatory re-testing but they're wrong. They don't have a right to drive a vehicle. They have a right to apply for a license and that's it.

I can't survive without oxygen. You want to revoke my license?

Allow me to re-state: there are certain factors that you have no control over that prevent you from ever safely operating a motor vehicle, e.g. blindness or narcolepsy. I don't know if using oxygen tanks is one of those things, really.
Also my diatribe wasn't really aimed at you (unless you were being sarcastic ). The perceived "right to drive" is just kind of crazy, like the perceived right not to be made uncomfortable or not to be offended.
