First thing I would do is pay off all my lines of credit I've had to take out because student loans won't cover ever-increasing tuition. Then I'd pay off my student loans and tell them to PFO.

Once that's taken care of, I'd find a nice condo or something to rent/buy short-term (tell my current landloard, Boardwalk, to PFO). Then hire a good architect to start building my dream home. Not sure where to stick it though (Chestermere?).

At the same time, I'm buying an Escalade or some other nice SUV with cash. I'm gonna have some fun walking around all the fancy dealerships dangling my lottery winnings in front of them.

Next I would buy a ragtop yellow Mustang for my wife (she's always had a weird fixation on that car). Another self-preservation kind of mood.

My Dad's been having a hell of a time selling his house in Southern Alberta. I'd take that off his hands and set him up. My Mom could use a better place to stay and some cash. Both of them could be well taken care of.

My bro is making tons of cash in the oil industry. And he never talks to me. I'd give him a bit anyway.

My inlaws have been really awesome. They're going on a trip and I'm paying for all my relatives schooling.

All this is pretty stressful so I'll have to take a trip somewhere really nice. First-class. Probably bring some family and friends too.

Whatever's left will be invested. NOt sure how or where. As for charity, I'll give a little bit to my old high school and a bunch to my church. Any to the University? Maybe, if they start showing a more student friendly attitude...

Oh! And I've always wanted a really sweet suite. Silk with pinstripes. Yah...

Would you still work? I think I would finish this degree and then get a few more going only part-time (one or two classes per semester). Just for fun...

I'd see a finacial advisor and tell him I never want to work another day in my life. If you could invest 13.2 mil at at 3%, that 396K/year in interest. Granted, you'd have to pay half of it in taxes, but that still leaves you 198K/year. If you add 1/3 back to the principle that still leaves you with 132K/year to spend, while you'll get more and more each year with the growing pricinple. Man, that would be sweet.

The first obvious things anyone would do is buy a new car, house, house/cars for close family/relatives, vacations. I am a person that could probably spend every penny, so an investment would be very key. I would open a chain of my own restaurants that I have been thinking about for a long time. I'd buy a few franchises of Tokyo Express. Then I would invest in international properties. After all that I should have much more than the winnings I got.

I think I'd have to buy a house just outside the city on an acreage and then the penthouse in that new building that is going up where Vic Park Elementary is so I have somewhere to stay on Flames game's nights.

You stole my answer.

Drink less beer, smoke more rock.

That way I could lose the beer gut but stay groovy all the time.

Gold teeth with the word "Flames" spelled out in rubies across the top.

SLipcovers for the house.

Stick it in a bank, let it build up, after a while open a bar with a couple friends.

With 13.2 million I will:

Set a budget of 2 million and live it up around the world for 6 months.

Buy a red Ferrari 360 Spyder and custom paint huge Flaming Cs on it

Buy a luxury motor coach and give it a custom Flames paintjob a la the home jersey, with bright yellow letters that says FLAMES BATTLEWAGON across the sides with Black Flaming Cs and that ugly stallion head 3rd logo in front, use it to bus all CPers to home games from a predetermined location, save on parking costs

Open a tour company that exclusively travels to all Flames road games. Get group deals on tix/airfare/hotels and Invite all CP'ers to join said tour at cost.

Get a lifetime lease on a lower-level suite at the dome whenever one opens up. Have a CP party there every home game.

Invest the rest and in 30 years buy as big of a share of the Flames as the owners will sell me.

Hmm...the flames idea isn't bad. I think I'll buy a tank, and have it painted flaming C red. Then drive it toward Edmonton.

Didn't occur to me to buy a suite at the Dome. For some strange reason I've always wanted to own a piece of a professional sports franchise. Wonder what kind of share you could get in the Flames or Stamps for $13.2M?

Stampeders were sold for about $7 million IIRC.

Just reading this thread got me thinking about how many NHLers passed on money like this on their principle of no salary cap and free market system. It's always the ones without the money that value it more.

That much capital...I'd get some serious professional advice and invest some of it in stocks/bonds/income trusts etc to set up a nice consistant income source that I could draw from so say like 2.5 million of that. The rest I'd look to get into a very lucrative bussines like an oilfield company, or maybe start my own wind and solar energy company. Of course buying up a lot of real estate could work very well too if you picked the right location. If I could double that money three times in 15 years, than I might be able to blow it all on an NHL team. But I'd be miserable and not change my current lifestyle too much except for resigning my position at work to pursue other interests, pay off my house and buy a nicer vehichle for my wife. What can I say I'm greedy.

then I'd travel. Peru would be my first destination, hike the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu.
Good choice, I'd be sure to do that too. But I'd also spend a few bucks on some good spanish lessons first.

Practically speaking, you call up the private banking service of any of the big banks and set up an appointment. Not really for investment advice but rather to provide complete privacy ie. tellers at the banks can't see your accounts.

That's the kind of advice I was looking for. Then I got distracted dreaming about all the cool junk I could buy. I like the privacy aspect coupled with the "never having to deal with bitchy Doris at the front teller" aspect.

So you think that's what rich people in town do? Use private banking services? I've sometimes wondered if there are a bunch of other services regular guys like us don't have access to. Like maybe, once you talk to the private banker, he'll give you the address of this super-secret mall where all the rich people go to shop. A place where you can buy things that comon folks have never even seen before. And he'll give you the new number for emergency services: 912. No more living like a chump!

I work for TD and see private banking chqs all the time. We can not access the accounts on the system so we always have to call private banking and confirm that the chqs are good (they always are).

For the money, there is no need to get extra deposit insurance. None of the big banks are going under anytime soon. Furthermore, it''s likely that most of the money would be in equity investments which are not insurable.

One thing I would definetly do is use up all my unused rrsp contribution room. Sure it's not alot of room compared to your net worth but the tax free compounding always helps and whats more, fully taxed interest from GICs/Bonds/Foreign equity is deferred.

Another thing to get done would be an estate plan! Figure out where all your money is going to go after you're found dead one day from too much crack and hookers

Mostly I would just like to walk around behind the scenes. I'm too crappy to be a player, not savvy enough to be a coach and haven't had the required lobotomy to write like D'oh biggen.

If I had the money to be an owner, I would be very hands on. I would require all trades be approved by me and meddle in virtually every side of the business. I would be a total nightmare. Because I'm not qualified I'd eventually run my team into the ground and have to declare bankruptcy. But man - I'd have fun doing it!

Ehhh, Marc Cubans been at it for like 6 years now, and hasn't exactly run the Mavs into the ground. But than he's got a national T.V. Contract to help him out financially!!
