I could understand if like honda.com was already used and honda needed a website.
However with (and no offense to your web addresses, just using them as examples) thegamingpad.com, don't you think gamingpad.com would be a better purchase? or ipadgaming.com?
Also, and again no offense, but I don't really see these site addresses needed to be used by big companies, it more seems like they would be used by everyday people like you and me to create fan sites to rate ipad games and such. Basically I don't see the need to have the best web address, well enough to spend top dollar for it.

Interesting question. I cam across a Q&A in yesterday's Globe and Mail with Charles Carreon, the former lawyer for the original sex.com . For background see: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle1494193/ and http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...medium=twitter .
Anyway, he said similar to you; that people/companies have built brands up - in this case playboy, hustler, etc - and don't need such a name. I.e. you know where to go if you want their site, they don't need something more generic or something even more tailored to them. Anyway just 2 cents on the topic.

I'm not really expecting Apple to buy any of these domains.

It really depends.. if you have a business with an idea and you want a very specific domain and someone happens to own it, lots will pay out a few thousand dollars for a domain rather than go back and re-figure out what they want.

That's what I was saying, it's not squatting because the big company that owns the actual product or whatever isn't after these domains, but smaller companies or business ventures that want to start a site with products/services related to the actual product do. No one expects to sell some domain they think of for $1 million to a big company anymore, but lots of people will spend a few hundred or a few thousand dollars to get a specific domain rather than go back through their decision making process.
Incidentally ip.ad is also available, except you must be a resident or legal entity of The Principality of Andorra lol.

mypadonline.com, mypadonline.net
I don't know about these ones. At $8 a piece, I just snagged them on a whim. I guess they also have the added benefit of being usable for... other topics... besides the iPad.
ipadgamingonline.com
I just grabbed this one at the last minute. It has the "iPad" in it, which I wanted to stay away from, but I couldn't believe it wasn't taken.
Anyway, I don't know if they're actually as good as I think they are. I couldn't really ask anyone's opinion until I owned them and listed them... All I need is for one to sell for more than $32 for this to not be a failure.

If I were you, I'd be more worried about Kotex getting on your case

Contributing to the topic...
You can sell domains on Sitepoint : http://marketplace.sitepoint.com/cat...s/domain-names
Not sure if that's a good place, but at least one I've heard of.

Hey man, I'll be the first to admit that I can't always tell when someone's joking or not when they type something out online, without the benefit of body language and facial expressions you get in a real conversation... And I'll even admit that my own sense of humour is dry, sarcastic and often times hard to read...
I suppose I probably should have just rolled my eyes and ignored it, but I've had a pretty long day today. I was kind of hoping to pop in here and read some more constructive feedback, but all I got was a couple of guys high-fiving themselves over a tampon joke with a side of fanboy.
I guess I do need to learn to just ignore irrelevant crap like that. I don't know why I wig out like that here. When I think about it... if some 13 year old kid cracked a tampon joke around me out in the real world, I wouldn't respond like that. I'd just chuckle and go about my business. I wonder what it is about the internet that differs from reality so much?
Edit: Also... come to think of it, that kotex thing wasn't even that big of a deal. I was just in a pissed-off mood at the time and figured it was someone else trying to get under my skin. I really did blow my cool on that one. Wtf. Sorry about that, Shazam.
Edit: That fanboy crap really pisses me off, though, so I'm not apologizing for that bit at all. It's just such a pathetic comment to make, that it pretty much deserves all out warfare anytime it's mentioned. It's got to be, hands down, one of the most ######ed comebacks in the history of mankind. Everybody on this planet is a fanboy of something, so when you call someone else a fanboy, all you're really saying is, " The thing I really really really like is way better than the thing you really really really like!" Yeah, that's some good logic right there.

Don't want to totally derail your thread, but I don't think I agree with this. It might just be a simple case of differing definitions of fanboy, but to me a fanboy is someone who elicits strict brand loyalty.
I can't think of a single brand that I support and won't even think about the competition.
EDIT: I do buy the same brand/type of toothpaste everytime. Would this be considered fanboy of crest? I do this because in my entire life I have never used a different kind/flavour. It's definitely not because I think it is the best product out there.

Well that puts me in the clear, since I own Macs and PCs. I also use Linux.

You back away...FanIn is intense...he's registering domain names for this product, which he's already taken tons of abuse over, and probably knew he was going to get abused again by starting this thread.
Methinks FanIn is not a fanboi, unless you count him a fanboi of EIM (electronic indignant masochism), which is the forbidden love of getting riled up by anonymous posters on off-topic message boards.
