$65!? Where in hell did you find $65 a month in downtown parking, we're not talking about downtown Lethbridge are we!?? $250 is the going rate right now....
|
Parking can be had on 11th Ave for $65 a month. Not in the best of places but it's cheap.
|
The only place that might be that cheap is near olympic way on 11th Ave. I believe there is a CPR lot there. But don't be surprised if:
1. your car is not there when you go home
2. it is being used by a working lady as her place of business. [/quote]
I know where Hulk parks and it's a pretty good lot. It's between about 1st west and Center st. on 11th ave. It's a pretty good lot (paved and some plug ins). I'd have to call it one hell of a deal.
Hope he doesn't get too mad that I just gave up the secret to his lot, and now it'll be overrun with people. Granted he already has his spot so it's no skin off his back.

How about idiots that purposely block the c-train door sensors so their idiot friends will have the time to get their ticket stamped, thus holding up the train? I'm tempted to Krav Maga their asses.

That lot is hella huge... it's the ex co-op site. Not that sketchy really, relative to the area.
This thread is an interesting counterpoint to the recycling thread....

One of the Nine

Every year, I swear I will not go to the Stampede. Every year, I get talked into it at least once. This is the only time I ride the ctrain.
Last year, on the ride home (Southbound, thankfully), m'lady & I had the pleasure of standing adjacent to a completely wasted 15ish girl. She was bobbing her head & gagging mildly. At 39th, a seat opened up & her friend graciously ushered her into it. Thats when it got colourful.
Head bobbing evolved into full body swaying, and mild gagging became full fledged neck & jaw convulsions. I had barely enough time to push my g/f into the corner & get myself out of the way before the chunks flew. This girl was so wasted, she didn't even aim for the floor. It came flying straight out of her mouth like in a movie.
Her friend pulled some scrap (looseleaf) paper from her purse to help out. The girl just started mashing the paper against her own face in a vain attempt to scrape off the puke. Then came round two. The alcohol told this poor girl that holding paper against the mouth is a sufficient way to keep from puking. Of course, it came out from the sides. The car now had 270 degrees of puke. The only safe places were directly behind, and in the corner where I was.
Just then, the train stopped at chinook. The two girls got out of the quietest train car anyone has ever seen.
Year before that, I was heading North after Stampede. Northbound trains were full from Erlton station, so there was a huge backlog of NB passengers accumulating. I was patient for the first 20 minutes after watching 4 trains go by. The problem was that people close to the edge of the platform weren't being assertive enough. Trains were leaving with room in the aisles, which is enough to tick me off after a night of money wasting, drinking & gambling.
After the 4th train left, I vowed that I'd get on to the nex one, even though I wasn't very close to the edge of the platform. When that train arrived, same situation developed. It looked like the train would again leave without being as full as possible. I tapped the two people in front of me on the shoulders & apologized for what I was about to do, put my arms out, and started pushing forward - all the while yelling
"come on people, lets fill these things up... FILL UP THE AISLES PEOPLE!!!!!"
That was enough to get a few more people yelling... Next thing I knew, half the platform shoved their way onto that train, and yes, I was one of them... Barely...
As I rode the train up to the NW, I chatted with the lady I shoved forward (initaited by another apology, which she declined). We agreed that sometimes, Calgarians are pussies, and that people should be more assertive around here. Not rude, assertive. She told me that during rush hour, people arent afraid to fill the things up. Why are they afraid to do it after Stampede? Wait, maybe my first story answers this question...........

what about people who refuse to move to the back (or middle) of the train when others are trying to get on because they get off in 4 stops and don't want to say excuse me to the people that might be in their way - a terrific way to not let people get on the train when they need to.
|
JESUS!
I just started taking the bus to work today, and I couldn't believe that the people standing in the middle/back wouldn't actually move back. It seems obvious that when the bus pulls up to a stop with a dozen people waiting to get on, and there are standers almost to the bus door, that people should begin moving back to make room. Instead I look up and see no one in the middle/back even budging, preferring to keep their double-elbow-room.
I almost started yelling 'move on back' but I figured that was traditionally the bus driver's job (and I'm not a psycho... not after just one day... not yet).
If this keeps up I'm going to bring either a megaphone or a gun one morning and just let 'er rip

Its already rediculously packed so I'm not too worried
If you get a pass now its up to $75 though. They are letting me keep the $65 rate they started with for a while.. not sure how long.

They got guys here in taiwan who watch the doors, and yell at you if you try to get on the train while people are getitng off, and then yell at you to move on in.. (or so i assume, since I can't understand emm).
you should see the trains in Taipei though, there at least 3 times as long as the calgary ones. and i mean at least.

I always thought the C-trains in Calgary were stupidly underplanned - what kind of an efficient transit system makes the subway stop at lights downtown? They are good for people watching, though. Especially for those who drive to work - it's interesting to tune into some of the conversations.
Trains in Japan are whacko. Once in a while I'm in Tokyo on business and this is the kind of stuff that greets you trying to buy tickets.
I don't live in Tokyo, though, so I get to avoid that for the most part.

Well everyone brings up some very good points.
BUT, Calgary Transit is till the most economical way to travel to and from work and school in this city.
And being a University student, having the U Pass is unbelievable.
For 120 bucks I get unlimited trasnit use from September 1 - April 30.
I am sticking to Calgary Transit as long as I live and work in this city....

Good point TOTF As much as it sucks... I'd rather hope on a bus/train and just zone out rather than fight traffic in the morning.

I take the C-train everyday to work downtown, and while there has been a few incidents (like 1 or 2 a year) I think that it is the best way to travel to work (other then cycling or walking if you are close enough).
Isn't it a little odd that Jordan got slammed by admitting that he is too 'lazy' to recycle, but there are a lot of people who drive to work for the same type of reasons? Lots of people say they don't take transit because it is dirty (which it can be), then is it ok for people to say that they don't recycle cause it is a dirty job?
I am not saying that I am the most enviromental person in the world (actaully not even close), but don't you wonder how much pollution you are putting in the air by driving every day?

Not true, I parked in that lot for over 2 years. Even left my car over night many, many times. Never once did I have a problem. And I don't drive an old beater either. The $70 (was raised $5) is a great price if you work close to that area.

That's great if you live close to a major route within the city. I live a 5 minute walk from campus. My UpAss fees are mandatory yet I rarely have occassion to use the pass. People who live in Airdrie don't have a lot of use for the pass either. It's a tax to subsidize the few people that can make use of it.
And don't get me started on the convenience of transit here in Calgary. It's nice if you work downtown. What about the thousands of people that work at the airport? Someone explain to me how I can get from 16th ave and University Drive NW to the airport, using only CT, in under 90 minutes. It's a 20 minute drive. Plus, I start work as early as 6:30am some days and stay as late as 1:00am (or later) many days too.
My wife works along Route 19/119. She can't get home from work using CT on Sundays because the service stops too early.

I have been on the C-Train twice when there has been rather disgusting events happen.
1) Going to school in the morning, It is packed as usual. One guy gets on and is standing in the corner, about 2 feet away from me. Between 39th ave and Erlton (under the tunnel) he decided to let loose with the puking. It was rather un announced, but he had the decentsy to turn and puke in the corner right by the door. That was fun.
2) Comming home from school, get on at Uni, it is probably around 4 pm, so just around evening rush hour. There are 2 drunk indians sitting across from me, sleeping peacefully. About halfway through downtown, after the train is rather full of people, and getting busier, the male drunken indian wakes up and decides he has to releive himself. So he unzips and proceeds to p*ss on the train. It probably was a good thing that it was one of the new trains, so he was p*ssing into the back of the other seat, and not onto anyone. If I had not been sqeezed up against the window.. i probably would of picked him up and kicked his drunk ass out of the train. But the transit police picked him up at Earlton and got rid of them.
Other than that... nothing too exciting has happened. I do know that the train is pretty much empty at 6am. Damn insomnia..

I thought the same thing earlier up in this thread. I guess it's that people feel that recycling is less of an intrusion on their lives rather than stinky people and pukers on the trains.
Calgary Transit keeps raising the monthly pass rate, not realizing that if a couple both work downtown, two passes more or less equal the cost of parking downtown. I think we all know which one they're picking.
Electing to drive to work downtown is one thing that I understand but it does drive me nuts when I see a humongous Ford Expedition or GM Suburban carriying the driver only during rush hour downtown. Did you really need the 6.2L V8 and 4x4 to navigate Bow Trail at 30 km/h? That's the kind of waste that even gets to me, a self described non environmentalist.

The city is planning on extending the C-Train to the airport. The only problem is money (which is a pretty big problem), but the plans are all set.

I personally can't believe how much Transit passes are these days. Even if you take it twice a day... you just barely save money.
