This is a good topic. I'm a financial planner as many here know and I try to steer my clients to lawyers and away from these kits. I know the problems that can occur when mistakes are made. In fact, I have one heck of a horror story. It's a true story that costs an estate millions. I'll reveal it if anyone asks.

Horsepucky. Mine cost around $300.00 including living will and power of attorney.
aaronk....I think there are some legal minds on this board, but you can always PM me - I'd be happy to put you in touch with my lawyer. He's been handling our family's legal needs (business, homes, estate) for over twenty years.

Edmonton only has criminal defense, and DUI lawyers. Nobody in Edmonton has an Estate.

Actually, there were wills. To make a long story short, family was very wealthy, with a very successful business, huge luxury home, etc. One child, married daughter. Daughter splits with husband, never updates her will or gets one (not sure, it wasn't my client). Entire family (wealthy mother and father, also daughter) die in a car accident. Estate ends up with the daughter's former husband. He's a deadbeat druggie now. Deadbeat former husband/son-in-law pees it all away - huge house, business, savings, insurance. Luxury house ends up being a drug house.
This story was told to me by a financial advisor friend of mine who worked with these folks as their advisor. Not having a will and not updating it as required can cost a fortune, as it did in this case.

Not having a will actually would have worked much better in that situation. the only way the ex-husband gets in is through the will, if the estate was distributed by law a non-relative isn't getting a sniff of it. Not to say that you shouldn't get a will, but if you do get it done correctly and make sure you keep it up to date.

Another vote for Troutman here. Although he judges if you leave anything to animal related charities. Just a PSA.
