My mom is in Puerto Montt, Chile right now, we can't get through to find out if she's okay yet.

My e-mail said this this morning:
Quote:
An 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred, near the coast of central Chile, at 0634Z this morning 02/27. The Alaska
Tsunami Warning Center indicates that a Tsunami was generated that potentially could impact the U.S. west coast.
A Tsunami Advisory has been issued for areas from the California-Mexico border to the Oregon-California coast
and for coastal Alaska from Kodiak to Attu.

This was from a CORMS update (Continuous Operational Real-Time Monitoring System) from NOAA.

Do you know how far Puerto Montt is from the epicentre?. Its phone lines are probably overloaded like alot of other cities in the country I suspect. If any of the connections run near Concepcion or close to epicenter they may be damaged and take time to repair. As long as she is far enough away she will be okay. I will keep you and your mom in my thoughts.

Looking at early pictures, and a webcam from the Conception airport, looks like the building codes are a little tighter in Chile than they are in Haiti.

I went to mapcrow.info and entered in the cities of puerto montt and concepcion. They are over 500 kms apart over 600 km if you drive between them. I am sure your mom is doing well.

It's a couple hundred km away I believe, but still far too close for my comfort. I'm sure communications are totally overloaded up and down the entire coast so I'm trying not to worry too much. She and her friend don't speak spanish so I'm a little concerned about her hearing and taking seriously any tsunami warnings.

Right now your mom is just as concerned about getting word to you and the rest of her family as you are to her. It might take some time but the call will come.

Wow. A couple of my clients is in Chile right now for what they thought would be the trip of a lifetime. I have an associate who is from Chile. I just heard that this 'quake was 1,000 times the magnitude of the Haiti 'quake.

I just turned on my TV 20 some minutes and it was on a BC Global news channel, the coast of BC is under a Tsunami watch until at least 3:00 PM Pacific Time . Big waves are expected to hit the coast of BC around that time.

Well good news for my family. My mom finally got an email through and she and her friend are fine. They were in Puerto Montt because they had decided to take a cruise down to the tip of S. America - they left yesterday and were far enough away from the coast to not be in danger of a tsunami.
Unfortunately a friend of mine is not so lucky as of yet. She is from Chile and hasn't yet heard if her parents in Concepción are safe. Hopefully she'll get good news soon.

I guess someone decided Vancouver wasn't wet enough from the rain this past 2 weeks. Someone protect the Olympic flame!

I can't even imagine what an earthquake of this magnitude feels like. It appears Chile has much better building codes in place than Haiti does, so hopefully the death toll and damage will be much less.
The California and Alaska Tsunami advisory was just lifted. I would assume that means the entire coast up to Alaska is probably in the clear.
