Try to water when the plant actually needs it. That will make the biggest difference. If you water when the plant is extremely dry, chances are a crack has formed between the soil and the edge of the pot.......and the water you provide flows down that crack into the bottom saucer area.....and your plant is still dry. If that has indeed happened (and you won't know until you take those decorative rocks off the surface and check), you will have to rehydrate the soil in that pot. Unless you have a deep laundry sink, for a pot this size, you will need to do this in your bathtub. Simply put the plant, pot and all, in the bathtub and fill with cold water until the pot is covered with water. Let sit for an hour or two, then remove from the water, put plant back in its regular spot, and try to water more efficiently in the future.
Try to get into the habit of feeling the soil for moisture before you water. And for plants that are in larger sized pots, get a fork and dig up a little soil and see what it is like an inch or two below the surface.
Also, when you pot or repot plants, don't tamp the soil too firmly. You need some air pockets in the soil where water can accumulate and actually get to the roots.
