I remember reading a book about the history of the CIA and one former officer was questioned about all the assasination rumors and his quote was "I wish we had that capability"
Fact is that the CIA hasn't really been that good competant intelligence gathering and operations entity since the days of Dulles in the early to mid 60's. They're more like a gang that couldn't shoot straight and fights internally now.

I guess its because we get to see it unfold by the security cameras. Its a bit freaky when I think about it.

I prefer this than invasions and occupations.
Heck, the recent war in Iraq might have been avoided if the CIA or MOSSAD would have just assinated Saddam Hussein and other leaders.

Had an idea!

Or they could have just not done anything about him. Saddam was helping keep the region stable, and if he was still in power Iran wouldn't be going for nuclear weapons.
But I agree, I prefer this method a lot more than I do a fullout invasion of a country. Although with Afghanistan I would make an exception.

It really went down hill after the death of Admiral Greer. Ryan was a great analyst but after Greer died, Dr. Ryan came into conflict with both his co workers and members of the cabinet over Operation Reciprocity. The CIA never recovered imo.

yeah and then they made Ryan's son into a trained assassin, meanwhile.
I still think that the CIA had a role in Ryan becoming president.

That included Special forces and most likely CIA black ops.
I can't remember where I read it, (maybe it was here) but there was an article about real life "Jason Bournes" and "Treadstones" (Minus the amnesia of course) and how after 9\11 a CIA task force was set up for the sole purpose of finding and assassinating key terrorist targets.
The catch was that real life was nothing like Hollywood and the risk and logistics to successfully pull it off wasn't worth it. They were better off using branches of the military that specialize in anti-terrorism.

I believe that US special forces generally got more funding (with the exception of Marine Force Recon) anyway prior to 9/11. Somolia, some of the younger rangers were ditching their squads to tag along with the Delta teams because there were better equipped and trained.
US Delta Force was primarily formed and tasked with Anti-terrorism as it's primary function (intelligence, hostage rescue etc..). After an incident in Iran which say two aircraft destroyed and soldiers lost, Navy Seals also took on that role with the belief that they would have been able to do the Iran job better.

Yeah, it was really weird because they were hispanic.
It was such a terrible book and I remember cringing at the launguage in it like
"You bet your bippy brother"
Tom Clancy mailed that one in.
Terrible way to end what was a pretty solid series of books.
I'd always hoped that he would expand on John Clark a little bit more, he was a great background character, or James Greer.
And his other books the netforce books or whatever they're called are just bloody awful.
For the money the best fiction book that he ever wrote was Red Storm Rising.

Wasn't Netforce one of those series that Clancy just created the High Concept for but didn't write the novels? Or am I confused.

Thats right, those books were terrible, I stopped reading the series after the first one.
I used to also like Larry Bond, he wrote three excellent novels. Vortex which was about racial tensions and a ground war in South Africa. Cauldron which was about a land war in Europe after a world wide economic collapse, and Red Phoenix which basically recreated the Korean War using modern warfare. He also co-wrote Red Storm rising with Clancy and wrote the excellent Harpoon Computer Games.
Unfortunatley he fell into the trap of writing serialized novels and his later stuff just isn't that good.

Mossad, Mossad, Mossad, Mossad, Mossad, Mossad............

I guess I'm curious why its such a failure of Mossad to get caught? Its not like their guys were captured/arrested. Sure, these agents may or may not be useless now, but it also sends a pretty strong message to people that they can't even hide in their own hotel rooms in neutral-ish countries like Dubai.
Also, I fully agree that Teeth of the Tiger ruined the Jack Ryan series. I wish I could un-read it.

Because normally the Mossad sends that message without even being seen. If you were to believe rumours about what the Mossad is capable of then you'd think they were just shadows that could kill.

Maybe they wanted to expose how powerful they can be? I agree, I'm not seeing the fail here.

It depends on your definition of success. Yes they completed the hit. But I'm sure the higher ups aren't thrilled it was on CCTV.
