Looking at the animated gif, it looks like she somehow missed the ground trying to plant her right pole into the ground. The second she leaned to her right, the lack of support toppled her over.

It was intentional, she was terrified to go down the course but didn't want to chicken out so she faked her little fall.

She looked like she was about to do a crossover as if on ice skates.

Surprising that it would happen in the Olympics, but I've done that a couple times just messing around near the lift or even from a complete stop.

It's actually fairly common. Just a lack of concentration.

Anyone else open this expecting something about how overhyped the Canadian ski team is or was anyways.

I don't know if your kidding or not but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. A lot of women didn't even bother today with the super combined cause of the difficulty of the downhill portion even though it's shortened and they graded down the bump at the end of the run.

It actually did happen to a very prominent Canadian skier at the time, Ken Reed, at the 1980 Winter Olympics held at Lace Placid.

Slightly different circumstances, but about same distance from starting gate. I think his binding released or something, he lost a ski.

Very disappointing since he was a huge favorite to do well.

She caught the outside edge of her ski which brought her down. This is pretty common on downhill skis (probably 210cm), with the super long shovels when you are skating hard out of the start hut you can catch the outside edge (which is insanely sharp). These skis are a lot different than your 165cm sport chek specials. It sucks and I felt awful for her, maybe because I used to ski race so I understand more. I think I read something about her tweaking/tearing her ACL as she went down as well. She had potential to medal as well.

It does suck but I admit, I laughed. Even the commentator laughed at first and then he caught himself and started with the sympathetic comments.
